I'm pleased that our isolationist neighbors finally decided to pay a visit. Maybe now we can break the ice. It's very odd, however, that after so long of avoiding us, reacting to our attempts to reach them diplomatically with force, and merely acknowledging receipt of our messages, that they suddenly send a delegation to us in person. Something isn't right here; why didn't we at least get a message from them before they sent their diplomats our way? At any rate, while we are preparing a safe environment for them, we have plenty of time to talk.
Right now let's just focus on figuring out what they're doing here and what they want. We are not sharing tech or resources with them unless we can do so with at least some basis of trust; they've given us very little reason to trust them so far.
Closely monitor the system's sun; try and establish an accurate projection for how long it might take before a solar event occurs. We need a timeframe.
Evaluate the potential of the caverns on Shiva to survive a dangerous solar event. Consider possibility of using them as an emergency bunker. May need a sizable transport fleet to move people quick enough.
Harden essential electronics to survive the intense heat. Build emergency shelters and bunkers on Aries and stockpile emergency supplies; create secure backups of as much essential data as possible. Make sure our AI core and core systems can be protected. Also, try and keep the Mavens safe, their implants will no doubt be fried if we do get hit, making them useless at the least.
Adding to that. The caverns on Shiva will be of as much use as a normal underground bunker. Problem is that solar flares occur in such a short time that we can't possibly get anyone from Gaia/ Aquarius to Shiva. Only if we're facing an prolonged period of severe solar storms would this be viable.
We should also stockpile electronics. Lots of them. The largest solar flare ever witnessed by mankind would have destroyed the majority of all electronics if it had occured in modern times.(Thank god it occured in the 1800, when the largest problem was people thinking the world was ending). I believe we already have an entire shelter system on Aries, Equiping them with magnetic shields might help.
We can try to bring our ship into low orbit if needed, but that can be dangerous. I propose that in case of a solar flare we power down the ship, switch to the bunker back-up then wipe the ship AI, and reinstall it from our copy. Mavens should be protected.
Another danger are the enormous amount of orbital stations we have hanging around. As far as I'm aware, all our space elevators(of which there are a lot, since each defense sattelite has one) use magnetics as stabilizers. Even worse, the cable is a giant conductor. This means that should the flare hit hard enough, all our thethered elevators will fail, and might even collapse. Another problem is that during a flare the upper athmosphere heats up and expands quite a bit. This might drag lower sattelites(defense network) out of their orbit and into the ground.
I therefore propose a 3 layered defense network.
Stage 1: Modified Hydrogen scoopers which use their magnetic field to catch the brunt of the impact and deflect it away from our planets.
Stage 2: Orbital defense. Equip everything with magnetical shields, and escape pods for the crew. Clean up defunct or non secureable sattelites.
Stage 3: Bunkers, and suchlike.
I also want to instate 2 new things. Namely an early monitoring system for the sun, and a Spaceweather broadcast. Basically an advice system for spacetravellers. *
*Includes such things as damaged mass driver gates, possible meteor showers, docks that are overcapacity, and most importantly, solar flares. We should declare a potential flare alert, and warn all ships without adequate protection that they are travelling on their own risk. In order to prevent a stall of the economy, it might be wise to use several of our combat ships to escort civilian ships. Their shields should be able to whistand smaller flares and protect the civilians.
