Terraforming: Suggestion Game
« on: February 21, 2012, 10:21:10 am »

You are a Sentient AI, charged with protecting and nurturing a small colony of humans. Your ship, which holds 5,000 hibernating humans (50% male, 50% female) along with a Noah's Ark of plant and animal specimens, is sitting in orbit of your target star. Your ship also holds the key to terraforming: a nano-factory, tucked safely deep within the hull. After your long and uneventful journey, you have arrived.

>scan the system to detect any planet.
>select the planet closest to what is refered in your database as "homeplanet" as destination
>orbit it
>further analysis.
>print relevant data from said planet and home planet, such as temperature, atmospheric pressure and composition, water presence, and any necessary chemicals.

>secondary directive: search for any trace of life on the planet.

If we don't have specific orders to keep the humans safe, then eject them. If we do, then look for the planet with the most resources, land, build a hibernation-chamber-thingy on the planet, put them in there, and create the army Xeron was talking about.

A variety of personality subroutines spring to life, offering a number of suggested courses of actions.

The system scan begins without disagreement. There are two gas giants with a number of small moons, five terrestrial planets in the inner system, and an abundance of asteroids. So many so, in fact, that the scan picks up two asteroid impacts against terrestrial planets during the initial 24-hour period. Asteroid impacts are rated as a potential threat, both to the ship and the colony.

As the scan progresses, a number of the subroutines inquire as to the need to keep the human colonists alive. No specific directive is found to this effect, but there are no automated ways to dispose of the colonists pre-built into your ship. Further debate and direction is required on this point.

Unfortunately, the section of memory relating to "homeplanet" appears to have been corrupted during the journey. Ship remains in orbit of the sun, observing the system in general.

The nano-factory is prepped for creating of military robotics, but specifications are required before production can begin.

Scan the terrestrial planets for minerals, and begin construction of mining drones.

Scan humans to determine optimal climate.  Head to the planet that best matches that climate.

Space suits that can't be opened in any way whatsoever, barring a very, very sharp blade.

Scans for minerals commence, and two of the terrestrial worlds, A and C (in order from the star), show an abundance of metals and other valuable minerals. Planet D also has minerals, although the amounts are more trace.

Mining drones construction orders are sent to the nano-factory, and production begins immediately. A fleet of 100 drones is constructed over the course of a week. Construction of space suits also begins, and 2,000 suits are produced during the first week. They are more or less built to spec.

Attempts to scan the humans fail. The program faults previously encountered seem to be more widespread than expected. A disk check routine is run, and locates the problems. Future requests for programs and scans will not run into the same problem.

A renewed check of the directive programs reveals that the humans are not to be killed intentionally. They are to be protected and nurtured as best as possible.

The second planetary scan reveals basic incompatabilities with human biology. Planets A, B, and E all contain atmospheres that are too hostile to terraform within the lifespan of the ship.

Planet C is an aquatic world with a shallow ocean covering the surface. Lifeform scans reveal large quantities of underwater life, as well as avians. Pressure is slightly higher than normal, gravity is above average, and size is above average for human settlement.

Planet D is Mars-like in nature, highly oxidized rock spread thinly over the surface. One small ocean remains, although it is frozen. Temperatures are below average, pressure is below average, and size and gravity are lower as well.

Time lapsed in system: 1 Week

Commence creation of military robot design. They shall imitate a meatbag to its fullest. Its limbs shall be able to change into mortal weapons.
Create more miner bots and send them to planet D

+1 those moons could be more interesing than old, plain earth.
Also I would try to learn more about planet C life, just in case. We don't want to settle in place where there are extreme temperatures or poisonous insects/plants(but well, unknown bacteria will be more of a problem for humans health).
