How to prevent freezing of water on the surface?
« on: February 21, 2012, 09:18:05 am »

Hello Everyone!
I'm on salt, cold place. My dwarf fighting with a lot of undead, this isn't evil biome. I can't penetrate Aquifer, but i want alone figure out how do this. But i have one small problem, with water supply. I have aquifer on -2 level, so i made tank on -1 level, and and create a hole on ground. In winter it freeze. How can i prevent it?

I builded small cabin, to protect my water from bad rain, but it still freezing.

With magma.

Seriously, the only known way to prevent water from freezing on the surface in a freezing area is with flowing magma on the Z-level below.  Building a roof over it does not work.

This is probably impractical in your situation.  Try to make a cistern in a place that has never been exposed to the sky instead.

If you ever manage to punch through, you can build a reservoir with a floodgate-controlled pipe to the aquifer layer, and you'll have infinite water to use at your leisure.

You build a well directly over aquifer, that'll make them drink salty water.
As for the preventing of freezing, Sphalerite has said it all. I can come up with a bunch of weird ideas about this, but they're untested and have a little chance of being true.

Wells are your friend, in that case. Just be sure to make enough that your dwarves can always get water and don't have to wait all that long.

Then build wells.  Dwarves will always drink water out of a well, even if the well is built over salt water.  Although you may have trouble with the water freezing in the bucket if you're in a freezing biome.

Of course, your best bet is to brew enough booze that your dwarves don't have to drink water in the first place.
