So, I have located my first vampire. What now?
« on: February 21, 2012, 12:04:15 am »

By accident, really. I always nickname my military dwarves so I can know what type of weapon to issue them. He refused to take a nickname. Then I looked at his history and saw that he was from very many fortresses...

But what now? He hasnt struck. I could potentially atom smash him... but what would that accomplish? No, I want a use for him. Or them, since I'm sure this isnt the last vampire I will find.

Here is my first idea. Build a small barracks, send him in wall it off... and build a drop chute above it. From there I can drop booze, and more vampires once I locate them. Keep them there, permanently training.

That way they would be either A: the last holdouts in case of Fun. Seeing as they dont need food or booze.

Or B: My elite squadron of vampire warriors... only allowed outside during sieges to fight. Thoughts?

Said barracks could be a great way to get rid of useless children, as well.

One note - if your fortress has only vampires, it crumbles, is the rumor going around.

I would also test whether extracting animal blood works to keep them happy.

Why couldn't my vampire Hammerer eat someone useless, like a migrant? Instead, she went after my only gemcutter.. but sadly there were no witnesses, so I convicted someone's pet duck as the murderer.  It got off easy, with no beatings or jail time.  >.<

From what I understand, vampires are technically dead.  From a certain tag they have, can't remember which.  And if your fort has no "living" members, it crumbles.

Someone tried giving that tag to all dwarves and then started a new map.  The fort crumbled instantly.

Wouldnt that turn all dwarves who drank from it into vampires?

Well then, it's simple! Turn the current setup inside-out: the entire fortress except one dwarf becomes vampires, and our normal dwarf is kept isolated yet cared for. Occasionally toss in another dwarf as insurance, so you don't crumble if he/she dies.

According to my experiences, vampires follow burrow restrictions outright compulsively. A vampire stationed in a burrow far from the fort will stand there for eternity. Making a barracks and a burrow for vampires keeps them training at a safe distance from the living.

Since vampires are extremely tough, gather them all into a highly trained squad and burrow them in the HFS

I assume, unless someone has !!SCIENCE!! to show otherwise, that dwarf vampires only feed off dwarves. This is understandable as dwarven blood will typically be booze with traces of haemoglobin. But it would be handy if if dwarf vampires followed the established vampire canon (certainly as far back as Bram Stoker's Dracula and probably much earlier) where human vampires prefer the blood of their own kind but will feed off lesser creatures, albeit reluctantly. If DF vampires followed that pattern then you could not only have a squad of immortal warriors but also use them to dispose of any surplus goblins, kobolds, cats etc. that you had acquired, thereby keeping their strength up.

You can have a fortress with only vampires, all of my dwarves died in a siege apart from one vampire who dug underground and the fortress survived.

This is not accurate. It's possible that modding caused the fort to crumble, in reality this isn't how you build a vampire fortress. I personally killed or vampirized every dwarf in my fortress, it did not crumble.

Well the vampirism has some random varibles  perhaps one of them is the tag that counts them as dead so that in some worlds vampires would count as dwarves for the purposes of keeping your fort going, and in the next world they wouldn't and there's really no telling which breed of vampire you've got untill its too late.

I'm not sure how much you know about coding but that makes absolutely no sense.
