Unintentional Solution to the Vampire problem
« on: February 20, 2012, 10:29:08 pm »

Embarked in a Terrifying Biome for kicks, got no undead but do have to deal with giant parakeets and Hamster men, (Lamest superhero ever) my past few embarks in the new version have been plagued with vampire trouble, bodies popping up drained of blood, and my sheriff always seemed to think a sound spanking was the best way to deal with a murderous undead bloodsucker.  However in this biome it occasionally rains dwarf blood.  Doesn't make my dorfs too happy, but if I do have any vampires, it seems their satisfied enough by bleeding clouds the not to go on covert murder sprees.  Hooray for horrible blood rain!

Yeah, occationaly I get and announcement that "It's rainging Dwarf Blood!" and the landscape turns red.  It's also kinda making the water supply undrinkable, oughta set up a screw pump and see if it'll clear it out.

Would a vampire drink out of well filled with blood?

A regular dwarf will as well.  In fact, if a dwarf drinks from a well tainted with vampire blood, they become a vampire.

The question is, if a vampire drinks from a well with regular dwarven blood in it, does that sate their bloodlust?  Could it now become commonplace to put vampires with their own tainted well?

...have we gone too far with the blood feasts and the corrupt well water?

...or not far enough?

I'm pretty sure it's official. And GIH, is that true? Drinking vampire blood causes vampirism???

It's been proven, yes.  Set a vampire at the bottom of a well with 1 upright spear.  Stab him, and then fill the well over the bloodied ground.  Anyone who drinks from the well will get a bucket of "water laced with Urist McVampire blood." and drinking a vampire's blood spreads the condition.  So, yes.

Yep, it's confirmed by experiments conducted by Broseph Stalin somewhere.

This causes other problems though.

Vampires will prefer to drink booze from the stockpile to maintain their cover identity, rather than drink nasty well water. (Even if it does taste like delicious dwarf.)

It has been reported that they will purposefully reduce their efficiency to suit the cover story if burrowed, and forced to drink water instead.

So, either we purposefully reduce their efficiency (isn't this why we are trying to integrate them safely into dwarven society in the first place?) To keep them from eatuing urist McCatlady's 15 worthless children and creating a tantrum spiral, or we keep the efficiency, and risk said spiral...

Proposed experiment:

Part 1: determine if booze can contaminate a well. (Drop a barrel from a very high place into the well, destroying it and spilling the contents inside?)

Part 2: should a well be so contaminated, does the watered down booze satisfy the booze dependency?

If both conditions are true, dropping all three of the source vampire, the normal dwarf, and the barrel of booze into the bloodletting trap should have 3 noteworthy effects.

1) dwarves drinking the nasty water will only have a bad thought, but won't experience a loss of performance associated with withdrawl.

2) dwarves who drink the nasty water will become vampires, boosting their stats.

3) vampires trying to hide that they became vampires will be sated by the normal dwarf blood in the water, preventing uncontrolled feeding.

I do not have any vampires, so I cannot fully perform this experiment.

Dropping a barrel will never destroy it.  However, you can place the barrel at the bottom of the well, and dump the contents.  A dwarf will run over and try to grab the wine, which will instantly slip through his grubby little sausage fingers and cancel the hauling job.

Or, maybe you're supposed to forbid the booze and dump the barrel, causing them to empty the barrel before hauling it.

Either way, there's a way to intentionally empty the contents of a liquid barrel where you want.
