You gather the soldiers together. You seem to be the only officer in the group, so the soldiers eagerly obey your orders. Altogether you have about 24 men with you, six of which are wounded, though most of them will probably pull through, unless their wounds get infected or something. You order the men to pair up and search the immediate area for anything useful or interesting. In the meantime you remain with the wounded and try to tend to them as best as you can.

After about fifteen minutes the men start to return. Most of them didn't see anything, but one pair reports that they found a stone road not too far from here. Lacking any other options, you order the men to prepare stretchers for the wounded as best they can, and then march towards the road.

The road is, well, a road. It's made out of stone, but unlike similar ones back in Russia someone obviously made it with care. Each of the stones fit together almost perfectly, and if you closed your eyes you could almost swear that it was asphalt. The road stretches to your left and to your right. Both paths seem pretty similar. If you had a coin you would flip it, but it seems like you'll just have to choose one or the other.

Take the road to the left, stay in the forest though to avoid being spotted. As the indigenous people have not been seen yet, we do not know if they are hostile yet. have two men 15 yards ahead of the group and two men five yards behind scouting for ambushes

You order your men to follow the road from the forest. They grumble a bit, but see the wisdom in your command. With a couple men ahead and behind to scout for ambushes you proceed forward. Going through the forest is tough, especially for the men carrying the wounded.

Every so often a stone pillar is placed along the road, and eventually you become intrigued enough to call for a break next to one of the pillars to investigate. The overall pillar is about two metres in height, almost as wide as a man. The pillar is comprised of three parts. A cube acts as a base, the main portion of the pillar is a cylinder, while on top of the pillar is a pyramid block of white marble, engraved with some sort of design, though it's far too weathered for you to make out clearly. The pillar and the base both have writing on them. Being illiterate you ask your men if any of them can read, and to your relief one of them raises his hand. Admittedly his knowledge is very basic, but it's better than anybody else. Unfortunately the writing on the pillar isn't Russian, so his skills come to aught, even though he recognizes a couple of the letters.

Your company makes poor time through the forest, and as night starts to fall you can't have gone more than a couple kilometres. You order your men to start setting up camp as best they can, and send a couple to bring in the scouts. To your surprise, they arrive a couple seconds afterwards. The reason soon becomes apparent, a group of horsemen was spotted riding down the road, heading in your direction. While they didn't seem to be pushing their horses very hard, they'll undoubtedly pass near the camp in a couple minutes.

Abandon the camp and hide in the trees. If they investigate, see how they act. Do the Cold Charlie trick and see if they are hostile or neutral. If hostile, fire!

Hey, wait... Ask your scout if they have weapons. Who uses horsemen when they have jeeps and tanks? Then again, how did we get here...?

You ask the scout if the horsemen had weapons or anything. He blushes and embarrassingly says that he kinda ran before he could make them out clearly. Great.

Lacking any other options, your order you men deeper into the forest. Trying to stay as silent as possible, every man strains his ears listening for the sounds of the approaching horsemen. Faintly the sound of clomping hooves can be heard, approaching closer and closer and growing louder and louder. As the horsemen reach your empty camp, they stop and dismount to investigate. It's hard to make them out in the ever increasing twilight, but you count about twelve of them, armed with guns and what look like sabres. They search the forest floor, apparently searching for marks left by your retreating them. As you approach, you do the Cold Charlie trick. One of the horsemen seems to have spotted it, and nudges one of his companions. Together, almost silently, they fan out, and slowly creep ever closer.

Have a wounded man who is capable of standing go forward and approach them. Base your next reaction upon how they treat him.

You nudge one of the wounded forward. He stumbles and falls. A couple of the horseman instantly turn their guns on him. Scared, he cries out, "Don't shoot! Don't shoot!" The horsemen pause, and then one of them breaks out into a huge grin, large enough to be seen even in the semi-darkness. "Greetings, men of Russia!" he cries in Russian. A heavily antiquated Russian pronounced with a thick accent, yet Russian none the less. The horsemen rush forward to embrace the wounded soldier, ignoring his protests and cries of pain.

Seeing the horsemen embrace the wounded soldier, you and your men confidently walk forward to greet them. After having the breath squeezed out of you by several of the horsemen, you take a good look at them and their equipment.

The horsemen are all burly and strong men. On average they seem about the same height as your soldiers, but are built like barrels, and are capable of lifting a man with each arm. Despite their weaponry they aren't wearing a uniform, unless they came from different armies and regiments. Their clothing is highly varied, though sheepskin vests and baggy pants and shirts seem to be fashionable with them. A couple have sheepskin caps as well. They are armed with muskets, sabers, and flintlock pistols, and you spot a couple lances strapped to their horses as well.

While the horsemen go to their horses to get food and wine to share with your squad, you gather your men together and voice your suspicions that the horsemen are all Czarists. You tell them that they should treat them kindly, since you might need their help later. The men grumble for a bit, but the sight of the feast that the Czarists are laying out quiets and objections.

The horsemen are more focused on eating than talking, but you drop a couple hints about how much you hate the Bolsheviks. Later, when the food is finished and every man has a wineskin in his hand, the leader of the horsemen finally decides to talk to you.

"Prithee, Russian, who are these Bolsheviks which thou art looking for? Is not Aleksey Mikhailovich still Czar? Hast another Dmitri arisen?"

Answer with the truth. it's likely to get you to someone in command faster. Tell them that your group suddenly just appeared here from the middle of a battlefield and you have no idea what's going on.

You tell him that you have no clue what's going on, and about how you and your men were fighting the Germans when all of the sudden you randomly appeared in this forest.

He nods sagely. "What hast happened to thou hast happened to us. Me and my brothers-in-arms were preparing to plunder a Polack village, yet almost at once we didst find ourselves among these green boughs once we attacked."
