"War. War never changes."
                                                     - Fallout Narrator Guy

In the summer of 4765 the Malian Institute for the Criminally Intelligent decided to test this age-old axiom.

"Charge! Charge you sons of b-"
The cries of your fellow officer are cut off abruptly as a German bullet passes through his throat. Despite the courage and tenacity of the Russian soldiers, the attack falters in the face of German machine-gun fire. You and several other soldiers manage to find cover behind the ruins of a building. As the only officer present, you take stock of the situation. Five of the soldiers huddling with you in comparable safety are carrying Mosin–Nagant rifles. The other two soldiers are cradling PPSh-41 in their arms. Somehow you've also managed to pick up a PPSh-41 along the way, though you don't exactly remember where. The magazine seems pretty heavy, so you decide that it'll be fine for now. Since the only way back involves running out into the street and dodging German machine-gun fire, you decide that you really have no choice but to go forwards. The wall that you're currently hiding behind behind has a hole in it, large enough for a single person to crawl through. If you're lucky, the ruins should provide enough cover for you to reach the next building and hopefully flank the machine-guns. Alternatively you could always go and see how the attack is going in the street to the east of your position.

Clearly it's going to take a tactical genius to get you out of this situation alive. Either that or a bunch of people seventy years in the future who you'll probably never see. Both could work.

You, and the two PPSh-41 alternate in short burst fire in the direction of the German Machine Gun fire, use this to cover as your riflemen run across to the next piece of cover. Once they reach there they should open covering fire to allow us to cross over to the cover as well.

You order your sub-machine gunners to pin down the Germans while your Riflemen run to the next piece of cover. Hopefully the volume of fire from five rifles will be enough to keep the German's heads down.

One of the gunners quickly leans out of cover and sends a burst of fire at the Germans. Before he can react, a sniper's bullet hits him in the head, splattering his brains across you and the rest of the squad.

FUUUUUUU -

Plan B: Go check on our men in the east street, we can't cross here, but if we can break through there we can flank this MG position, and the sniper allowing us to pin them in cross fire.

Order one of our men to hold his helmet out around the edge of the hole of the wall on the end of his rifle. If there is no response, send the submachine gunner through first, followed by two riflemen, ourself, and the other riflemen. Examine the building interior for routes further toward the enemy position.

((Assuming that previously we were trying to run across the street.))

You check the progress of the attack on the east street. The situation there is better, but only slightly. rubble lies across the street in several places, allowing a couple soldiers to crawl from cover-to-cover, but crawling is slower than running for your life, and so the attack hasn't gone as far. You'd probably be able to make it across without losing too many men. Still, you decide that heading through the ruined building is a better option at this point.

You order one of your riflemen to execute the old Helmet-at-the-End-of-a-Rifle trick. The helmet comes back unscathed, so you order the remaining sub-machine gunner to go through the hole, followed by the rest of the squad.

The upper levels of the building have all collapsed, but on the ground floor the walls are more or less intact. After finding some cover behind a pile of rubber, you quickly check your objective. The next house is in better shape, with most of its superstructure intact, meaning that you can't see inside. Judging by the amount of fire that the building is spitting out, you assume that the Germans are definitively holed up in that building. The roof of the building is more or less destroyed. If you had a couple mortars you could probably lob some bombs into it.

As far as you can tell the building has only one entrance, a heavy wooden door facing your position. The building probably has another door leading out onto the street, but which street is a different question altogether.

One of the soldiers looks at you, wondering what the hell he is supposed to be doing.

Order your soldiers to try to chuck grenades into the German held building. Use cover and try to cautiously advance to the door that is facing us.

Order your soldiers to try to chuck grenades into the German held building. Use cover and try to cautiously advance to the door that is facing us.

You order your soldiers to advance and then chuck some grenades into the building when in range. The firing from the building stops for a couple seconds after the grenades explode, before it starts up again, this time in your direction. One of the riflemen takes a burst to the face, while another one is shot in the leg, but otherwise okay.

Despite being pinned down, your plan seems to have worked. Faced with a lesser volume of fire, the charge has gained more ground and it will not be long before more soldiers come up to relieve you. Additionally the Germans will undoubtedly refocus on the charge as they get closer, meaning that your squad won't be pinned down as much. If the riflemen could pin down the defenders for a bit, you could probably run to the door and see if you can't force it open, though you'll be terribly exposed until you do so.

As the relief group comes forward and begins taking fire, lob a series of grenades into the machine gun nest while running forward to attempt to bash in the door. The grenades will provide distraction enough to protect you from attack for the time needed to reach the cover flush against the door. Your relief troops will draw their fire long enough for you to get the grenades in there in the first place.

When the German fire from the building turns back towards the street you yell at your squad to chuck their remaining grenades. In the chaos you rush forward to the door, and with your riflemen firing to encourage the Germans to keep their heads down you make it without a scratch. Using the momentum from your rush you launch a kick at the door. To your immense surprise, the door isn't even barred or locked, and swings open easily from your blow. Caught off balance you tumble into the building.

Luckily you fall is broken by some soft ground, and the only thing that seems broken by the fall is your mind. The crackle of gunfire is replaced by the soft whispering of wind blowing through the trees, the whistle of artillery changed into birdsong, and the cries of the dying and wounded faded into nothing. Shocked to find yourself in a forest, you quickly look behind you, hoping to see the door you burst through. Even the horrors of combat seem normal against whatever calamity has thrown you here. Alas, the forest seems to stretch infinitely behind and before you, with no indication of the door you went through, or the building you where attacking.

However you are not alone. Several other soldiers rise shakily from the ground, just as uncertain and confused as you are. Several of them seem to be muttering prayers under their breath. If you could remember any you'd probably join them.

Stand, immediately begin to marshal the soldiers about you into a group, assign people to positions in a squad and begin searching the immediate area in pairs. Before that though, check for wounded and treat them. Ensure loyalty and bonds.
