How to use burrows during sieges?
« on: February 20, 2012, 06:33:35 pm »

There used to be an order for "no non-military units outside". This feature was taken out (not sure why, but I think it was because of burrows).

Now, I made a huge burrow, several z-levels down, that held "most" of my fortress (nothing outside) and assigned the civ's while in sieges.

Now, this works, but I'm pretty sure there must be a better way of doing this. The problem is that it would stop the growth of my fortress (miners won't mine outside the burrow) which means I have to continuously increase the size of my burrow. This is annoying and there MUST be an easier way I don't don't know atm.

Can anyone tell me any tips on how to do this? How do you use burrows to keep McWoodman from getting killed but still keep McInsiders working all over the fortress? The old "only military dwarfs outside" worked, but that was taken out.

Make the whole map a burrow and selectively remove unsafe areas. The outside will be moderately easy unless you have a lot of elevation changes, the caverns less so. But with the caverns, dwarves shouldn't be wandering around there unless they're told to. Weavers can be suicidal idiots if web collection is set to automatic, but that can be switched off via the [ o]rders/[W]orkshop screen.

I am trying to make chickens lay bees as eggs. So far it only produces a single "Tame Small Creature" when a hen lays bees.
Honestly at the time, I didn't see what could go wrong with crowding 80 military Dwarves into a small room with a necromancer for the purpose of making bacon.

Man, but I love multi-level maps. Why did Toady get rid of that order?

I haven't tried it, but multi level designation is back in as of 34.01.

As for burrowing during sieges:
  • create your burrow
  • create an alert level for when you want the civilians to use that burrow
  • on the alerts screen, highlight the alert level, then highlight the burrow and hit enter so an "A" shows up after it, meaning the burrow is active during that alert.
  • when you want the silly-vilians to stay in the burrow, open the alert screen (m -> a), highlight the alert from step 2, and hit enter.  "CIV" should show up after it, meaning that is the civilian alert level.

You could have your military outside/in the killing area with path to outside, and the civs in a burrow behind a drawbridge to the rest of your fort with no path outside. Then, once you close the civ drawbridge, let them leave the burrow.

Somehow, that fills me more with dread than anticipation.  It's like being told that someone's exhuming your favorite grandparent and they're going to try to make her into a cyborg stripper.

Make a room full of statues and happy-thought inducing stuff, as far away from possible hostiles as possible. Designate this as a burrow. Name it "safe room".

During a crisis, go into military and then into alerts, check "CIV" as active and then select saferoom as burrow. Everyone except your military will go there and wait, oh, and they will spam your ass with job cancellations.

Hey, anyone ever tried to fit as many dwarves as possible into a 3x3 room? Should be fun.
