If only vampires were affected by sunlight....
« on: February 20, 2012, 01:57:12 pm »

Then I could just put my main dining room with a glass ceiling to the outside - and it would ignite those bloodsuckers.

Are there any way to filter these guys out of your fortress?

If you just want to avoid dealing with them check each dwarf by attempting to give them a nickname, if you don't want to metagame expose them to a drowning trap and see which ones flounder about trying to swim while the vampires won't drown.

I hate the idea of metagaming, I don't know why anyone would use it. I screen my dwarves as they come into the fort and check for humanoid parts jewellry and a long list of former groups. It doesn't take very long unless you are getting a 40+ wave.

I don't use metagame to purposefully check for vampires, but I do give custom proffessions to every dwarf who comes to my fort, to keep everything organized.  Been doing this not long after I started playing.. and it just so happens now it finds vampires for me.

However, I love my vampires, so I don't mind.  I would never intentionally kill one.. instead I'd put them to good use.

If you really don't want to deal with vampires you can set the number of vampires generated to zero in world gen.

It would be brutally difficult and probably won't work. In other words, it's absolutely dwarven!

I do it when I have a specific job in mind that requires a vampire, in any other circumstance I like to do it the old fashioned way.

Custom professions to find vampires, does assigning them in Dwarf Therapist work? I get the feeling it overrides it (I discovered in the current version it overrides children doing what they please).

I think it would but onThly because DT displays the vampires true name not they're alias. The reason the nickname thing works is because nicknames change the vampires true name not the alias he uses.

You know, there was a time when gaming companies tried to force you to metagame by making puzzles and similiar sorts of things that were crazy hard to figure out otherwise.   They did this to sell strategy guides, this all ended when the internet became popular though, thank god!

I didn't realize you could do this.  I going to give it one more go - doing "examine each new dwarf" tactic.  If that fails, I'll do the vampires=0 thing.

I love the idea, but right now there doesn't feel like there is a good 'dwarfy' way to handle the issue.

If vampires exploded (and I mean proper exploded, not the wimpy "blood streams out and they melt/liquify/burst") in sunlight:

1. We could make the most awesome landmines.
2. We'd have a reason why the starting seven never include bloodsuckers: All wagons WITH vampires are littered across a steaming crater smeared with blood.
3. We could make a little film called 'Attack of the the dwarf creatures', and rent out a theatre and some robots....
4. We could make the most awesome landmines. Just repeating it because killing goblins with an exploding geyser of blood sounds awesome.
5. Screening would be really really easy, but would preclude the development of the aforementioned landmines.

Sadly however, they don't. So we're stuck with trying to play "will it bounce".
