So I found an amazing waterfall fortress
« on: February 20, 2012, 08:03:50 am »

This is what it looks like from above
A 14z drop from the cliff

This would be the river... I saw some ottermen in it at onetime in the northern pool of water

I looked at the bottom to find a spongeman(Shattered) later when messing around( as this was just testing the area) my miner fell off then 2 others fell off I suppose they wanted his clothing got too close to the waterfall and fell off

I think I will  make a hydroelectric tower that sort of spirals down a couple times for power and all that jazz. Also it appears to have a infestation of raven men, giant mantis men, giant mantis's, and giant ravens

So does anyone want the world gen?

It does look sexy, but I'm wondering wether a wide river such as that, wouldnt effect fps too much?

(not wanting the world myself, currently in a "either construct everything, or use caverns as is" strategy)

Pretty sure the northern part is frozen year long so eh you could always dam the water as well

Spiraling Hydroelectric Tower?  Nah.

First, build some buildings down in the valley with glass walls and stuff with tunnels going back to the fortress, then build two 14z level tall dams (with hydroelectric turbines) and create an artificial lake in the valley.  Also, make sure you have a tower in the middle of the valley that's about 7z tall with a nice room at the top with an unobstructed view of both dams to put your dam control room in (disconnect power, reconnect power, open spillways, close spillways, emergency flood release, etc.).

I'm just wondering how I will dam the river to start construction... I suppose I will need to pump lava

It can be done - look here. http://www.bay12forums.com/smf/index.php?topic=96034 There was a pretty neat way of doing it in that thread.

Thanks for the embark, it's nice.

I want to build my fortress entrance half way down the cliff and have it through the waterfall. I am concerned about dwarfs, babies, pets being pushed off the floor I will build so have some questions for anyone who has ever built thusly.

1) is water going to be a problem once it is spread out (I will widen the river before the cliff drop) and is falling all misty like?

2) should I use floor grates to build a passage through the waterfall but itself so he water can drain through, my dwarfs can bathe, and babies and pets aren't lost in the process?

... I feel dumb...

I was going to ask for it as well, but I get the feeling that wall of world gen text should do something...

OK, so after I did quite well until, all of a sudden, three dwarfs drowned I tried again.

This time I can't go five minutes without a dwarf being swept to their death. Traffic zones be damned! Very frustrating, I wanted to play with this embark!

Check your combat reports to see if any animals smashed their faces falling down the waterfall, I had a few dwarves try to get the corpses (I think, dunno how to explain the same behavior).  Just forbid the corpses and they'll be fine, although don't be surprised if your cat decides to follow a rodent down the damn waterfall..

You can also go the extra step and traffic (o) forbid the tiles next to the river, so at worse they will step on the forbidden tile and not over.

I had! They still went pathed over the damn river.

This time I am going to premtively drain the thing, which I want to do anyway, and try and prevent death that way.

Restricted means they'll take another path even if it's 12.5 times longer.  But if there's no other path, marking a path "R" doesn't forbid it.

I take it dwarves pathing through the waterfall is an unintended consequence of riverbanks having ramps now?  You could just build a wall to keep them from going that way.

Tried again and walls, restricted river, and a priority bridge have prevented more deaths. The only downside to my awesomely progressing engineering is that the fortress boss got picked up by a raven woman and dropped off a cliff :(

He is a bit sore right now.
