Yeah my money's on modding, or wacky world generation. Is anything showing up in the errorlog?

excessively late reply but yeah...

if you are using the original ironhand update pack for 0.34.01 it makes fire snakes into fish and you can embark with them... booze goes boom after that

Clearly running multiple missions at the same time is a terrible idea.  The epic battle to see which team can cock it up worse has escalated again.

And Larry kinda gets blueballed in all this; just left with a raging bone spear and no where to put it.

Booze doesn't "go boom". Booze never "went boom". It boils off. It probably doesn't even catch fire, since its boiling point is below its ignition point.

It doesn't burn, it only boils, as any other liquid.

I guess that really was how rumors get perpetuated...!

I. Biome was not scorching.

II. I am not using any Ironhand update packs - graphics were manually updated with 0.6 version (I'm on a mac).

III. Game is not modded.

I'll try to load it up again and find the biome/embark site.

Odds are that when you modded the graphics in, you created a duplicate raw entry or otherwise broke the game.  Yes, graphics packs count as modding, and 34.01 changed the layout of some of the raw files enough to cause compatibility problems.

Well, I reclaimed the fort and the new load of settlers were spared the fate of their predecessors.

As you can see, the entire area is scorched.

Is there anything I can do to check what the error is, or prevent it from occurring again?

EDIT: I have found fire snakes in the wagon. I guess it was a texture pack error after all.

Interesting, some what the same thing happened here. I got a message that Urist McFiery has bled to death (he had been involved in no combat that I noticed). When I zoomed to his location a cloud of smoke was dissipating from his location. I seek no answers here, but would like to share the fact that something similar has happened to others also.

- The cloud seemed to do no harm to others.
- This was indoors in a huge bedchamber cavern with approx. 100 beds.
- I've made fortress beside a volcano.

- I have:
DF windows 0.34.11
Manila DF Launcher 1.10
Flora and Fauna 34i
Rise of the False Gods
DF Therapist 0.6.12
Phoebus_16x16

I had had a crash a moment earlier and the game had loaded to that point and the month changed just a few seconds earlier than Urist McSplosion combusted. And of course, the fire might have had nothing to do with the poor fellow spouting massive bleeding wounds a second earlier.
