I'm sneaking around for hours with my brand new adventurer without anything exciting happening at all. I reach a huge city, and decide that I want to spice things up by trying to enter whatever is underneath these grates that litter every corner of town.
After another uneventful hour of futile search for the sewer entrance, I find myself asking why I'm bothering with this at all. Maybe I should go do something more "productive", instead of watching ascii symbols move around.. Right when I'm about to give up I realise you can actually see sewer entrances listed -in bright purple- amongst the map info on the fast travel screen. Duh!
So I rush to the sewer entrance and start roaming the tunnels. To my great dismay all I find is corpses. Nothing exciting to be found at all. I decide to give it another half an hour, just to be sure, and lo and behold - I find an ancient underground society. Everyone's dead though. There's a huge cementary and all the tombs read the same; everyone died from starvation in 221.
The underground community is huge. I decide to search every room in the hope of finding something useful, but room after room is filled with nothing but corpses. I go up and down several floors, finding nothing, when I finally strike the motherload.
I reach a big, big room filled from wall to wall with finely crafted armors, weapons and trade goods. In my excitement immediately start collecting all the items, when a voice suddenly speaks out!!
It's a freaking MUMMY! A mummy appears!! And he's so pissed!
At this moment I literally stand up from my chair, point my fingers at my laptop and yell out my love for this game at the screen. After hours of -nothing-, this epic thing just happens. I went straight to this board to write this, and when I'm done, I'm going to kick this mummy's ass by chopping its head of and I'm going home with all the stuff in this room. And that's where it's at! This right here is what makes dwarf fortress an amazing game. It's like all of us who actually take the time to go past the steep learning curve are rewarded with this unparalled gaming experience that can't be matched by any other game.
So now! Wish me luck! Armok give me strength!! Meet your second doom mummy!
