Forgotten beast silk clothing!
« on: February 19, 2012, 09:25:46 pm »

While investigating changes to the game files, I noticed that forgotten beasts which shoot webs (which in 31.25 did nothing due to a bug) now should spray webs properly in 34.xx. They (but not other forgotten beasts) are also [WEBIMMUNE], so the webbed cage trap trick won't work on them.

In theory (but not proven/tested yet) we could make forgotten beast silk clothing. Setting up a silk factory is left as an exercise to the reader.

Dwarf fortress: When making clothes from giant spiders isn't enough.

Hello. Would you be interested in buying authentic +Three-eyed Skinless Therapod Trousers+?

Would forgotten beast silk be worth anything?

Any unusual properties, at least?

Could always trap one in a small room of fortifications with a well timed bridge raise or something. After that it's the weaver's job to grind some dodge skill!

It looks like the forgotten beast MULTIPLY_VALUE hasn't been set, so probably worth very little.

Material properties should be same as generic silk for FB/Titan webs.

However, should you encounter a HFS creature with webs, treasure them. They have this in the raws:
Code: [Select]
[SELECT_MATERIAL:ALL]
[MAT_FIXED_TEMP:10040]
[HEATDAM_POINT:NONE]
[COLDDAM_POINT:NONE]
[IGNITE_POINT:NONE]
meaning that their silk would be fireproof and magmaproof.

Not only could you make magmaproof clothes, it would be real easy to cover dwarfs from head to toe in this silk with just a robe, mittens, socks and hood. All we need to do is cover a vampire in this stuff and drop him in the magma sea and watch him fight all the fire imps.

No! No! I will not massacre my children. Instead, I'll make them corpulent on crappy mass-produced quarry bush biscuits and questionably grown mushroom alcohol, and then send them into the military when they turn 12...

FBs should have an additional benefit over GCSs-- they are immortal.  Whereas a GCS silk farm has a limited lifespan, after which you have to catch another GCS, assuming a second ever wanders through your map, a FB silk farm can run for forever.

However, it's pretty hard to get a captive FB, and I'm not sure about building a silk farm around them-- GCS silk farms typically rely on the GCS pathing through locked stone or metal doors, and (most?) FBs are building destroyer 2 to the GCS's BD1.

He he he.  Yeah, it almost looks done...  alas...  those who are in your teens, hold on until your twenties...  those in your twenties, your thirties...  others, cling to life as you are able...<P>It should be pretty fun though.

Wasn't the "Lack of fat makes you fireproof" thing fixed?
