It's not that dorves can see through stone it's that they don't understand what windows are for. 90% of windows have a view of the bare stone directly outside, they just like to brag about all the windows they have.

Civilizations: On Windows

Human: "I like looking out my window."
Dwarf: "I like looking at my window."
Goblin: "Something to break!"
Kobold: "Mine."
Elf: "Windows made from glass, glass made from fire, fire made from wood, wood made from cutting tree, cutting tree evil, window... evil!"

I think it's rather obvious.  Dwarves like stone.  They want a window through which to look at the stone, because they assume that's somehow better than having a simple stone wall.  It's sort of a "well there's gotta be a reason humans like windows" deal where they don't understand it, but somehow know it to be better.

This is going to be the "why are my animals fighting" of the new version, isn't it?  Every few hours it'll get reported...
Was that finally fixed? I haven't seen it happen since I started playing again, but I'm also so paranoid about it that I keep my animals very separated from each other and high traffic areas.

Nothing like figuring out my now-dead legendary sword smith was murdered by a pissed off horse.

It's not a bug.  Animals are supposed to fight when cramped together.  It's a nerf on the 1x1 cow pin on infinite milk.  And similar tricks that shouldn't be possible.

I was experiencing the fight non-stop though, with asinine amounts of free space. At one point in time, I just stopped using livestock; it cost me too much in "the hoof pushes the skull in and tears the brain" on nearly anything that moved even remotely close to the designated zone.

... cut any rock as if it were a gem- ...

ANY rock? Some native metal stones are worth more than most gems. I also hope we won't get a "Perfect Microcline" gem artifact.

I'm fine with using rocks as gemstones, many of them are used IRL. Stone windows make no sense, but then, most gems wouldn't make windows well either. It's probably an oversight, though I'm not sure if a granite window makes less sense than a gold opal one.

I don't know if you've noticed there's a thread before your post, but stone and opaque gem windows have been used by many non-Western cultures a lot.

It is said knowledge is like a foul-smelling herb. It must be cooked well and thoroughly with experience to make it palatable. A young scholar's knowledge is therefore not only worthless but disgusting. -- In Dwarf Fortress you have another paradigm. Gather as much of that smelly herb as you can and toss it at your enemy, fracturing his skull through the +capybara man leather cap+.

'Twould be nice to be able to construct windows as furniture and then encrust them with gems.
Lead windows with images in colored glass, anyone?  8)
