would building a door right next to the warm stone help (as the dorf would be digging from the door tile)?  I should test it, but I haven't had time to test out using magma aside from dropping "visitors" into them from my bridge (my first line of defense against the zombie horde :P)

I can confirm the faster magma.  When building forges my miner disappeared and there was smoke all over.  Usually the miner can outrun the magma flow.  There was a door 3 tiles from the breach too.  Luckily the forges then came online to make a new pick  :P

I don't think you can use channeling to breach a volcano wall either.  But Feb's idea with the door sounds like a good technique to try.

Congrats for you in DF2010.  However it appears things have changed.  Nothing you said helps.

If the fluid dynamics have changed, do Water Reactors still work?  Or is it only the magma fluid parameters that have been altered?

When breaching a volcano wall, previously, I would dig a pair of up/down stairs, then simply popped the down-stairs-orthogonal volcano wall square, and all worked well.

In 34.x, I too have had many fiery inferno miner deaths trying to use this method.

However, I have had no deaths when digging diagonally next to the down stairs. Given that Magma doesn't have pressure, I'm not sure why this would be safer -- my good luck may simply reflect luck, rather than a better method. If others see the same behavior, let me know.

Depending on what you need the magma for you could dig a tunnel right up to the warm stone and then dig the last block by channeling from above.
