I'm glad this is back! I love the first update. I can't see what will come of this. PTW for now, might join in when things settle down with school.  I still want to look over the save though.. have you posted it and I missed it or are you holding on to it for now?

I haven't finished the first turn, so I haven't posted the save yet. I'm in late Autumn, and writing up the second update currently.

I can live without the embark save if you want to hold on to it then. Can't wait for the next update!

Ute's Journal, 6th of Felsite, year 100

We haven't had an easy go of things since arriving. That damn river blocks us off from most of the Armok-damned lumber, meaning we need to scrape by on what we can scrounge here for now. I don't want to think about how yet, but we're going to have to find a way across the damn thing.


It became clear pretty quickly that wood is our most important resource. All of our buildings and anything else we need to build will have to be fashioned from it. As of now, we're beginning to exhaust the nearby supplies. The forests further up the slope aren't without their own dangers.



One of our woodsdwarves was lucky to escape with his life.




I don't see how we have much of a choice though. Building is progressing steadily. I'd like to have almost everyone housed come by year as mayor is up. We haven't had any trouble since that run-in with the thrips, and hopefully things will stay quiet.

Ute's Journal, 15th of Malachite, 100.

Migrants! A married couple, Kosoth Feboddom and Bomrek Udiludist, with three children(I didn't bother to note their names).





I've got them clearing trees and building like the rest of us. Speaking of building, most has gone according to plan. Progress is slow, but we have most of the bare necessities set up. Note to any future mayors - the river cannot be passed using bridges.

Another load of migrants today. Zulban Fathir and Edom Unulnakor. They brought four children.





I think we have enough food to go around, but it's just been raw plump helmets. Once the current lot of buildings goes up, I'll set some dwarves on getting a kitchen and still ready. I'm not sure how much booze is left in the stockpiles. Things are still pretty quiet. A lot of these coati men about, though - I must have counted 5 today.




We've finished a few houses, but still have a lot to do.

Armok's beard! Just when I thought we would get through the year without a spot of real trouble. A whole pack of coati men turned savage. Ambushed some poor woodsdwarf working in a clearing further up the valley face. He escaped with only a few scratches, but by the time he got back to warn me the whole stinking gang of things was rolling right into the camp. I was forced to call everyone into the store room to wait them out. They eventually did, but we can still see them skulking around the camp. Mountain's blood, here they come again! Wh_- --ad -a-sd- [the writing here becomes illegible.

The fight with the Coati men:

Ute had had enough of the beasts' incursions into her settlement. She stormed out of the storeroom into the centre of the camp. She quickly took stock of the dwarves around her. Most of the settlers were in camp, the barred from the trees by the Coati men. In a rage, she made a split second decision. "Oi! Dwarves!" Ute got their attention. Most looked as if they expected to flee to the storeroom again. A few dwarves began taking tentative steps in that direction. "Nae! Not this time. Wit' me, less show 'em what we're made of!"

The dwarves converged on Ute. "Children behind, grab your weapons, whatever you can find. If you don't have a weapon, use your hands. Form two squads. We'll give 'em a good show, by Armok." The dwarves nodded, their beards matted from the rain.

An unlucky Coati man probed into the village again. Ute roared, and led a pack of 11 wet, angry dwarves after her. The beast saw the threat and began bolting out the camp. The posse gave chase.




The coati man tried to shake the dwarves off his tail by lurching right and bounding up the wooded slope. The dwarves kept after him. The forest was disorientating. The posse was forced to push through branches and clamor up the slopes in pursuit of their quarry. Ute didn't see who got to him first, but by the time she got their, the Coati Man had been beaten into pulp by a group of angry dwarves. As the dwarves stopped to catch their breath, the creature's companions skulked into view, snarling and hissing. The group hesitated a moment before Broseph Stalin led the charge with his axe.


What ensued was almost an entire day of chases, scraps, brawls and kills. It ended with 4 of the beasts dead, and a few bruised dwarves. As they trickled back into camp, there was a glowing feeling of pride amongst the gang- they were capable of defending their home. There was no beer yet, but the dwarves clustered around and shared a meal of raw plump helmets and river water. We need to git a bloody still up... Ute muttered. Still, she was satisfied with their progress thus far. They just had more to do.


A child's scream interrupted their meal. He ran into the group, an angry, a screeching coati man right on his tail. Many of the dwarves scattered in shock. It only took one swing of Broseph stalin's axe to fell the beast.

Hope there is enough wood left for me to make my bridge.

I have no problem posting the save early if you need it for some specific reason. What were you thinking of?

Great update, keep them coming! It hasn't been a year and we've already got some battles. This looks like it will be fun.

And for the save, I'm going to look through legends mostly, so it doesn't matter when you post it. I also wanted to get a feel of the land, and a look at the migrants. A general who's who kind of deal. I like putting these kinds of things in perspective!

PTW. I would like to see an elaborate multi lane/multi level masonry bridge bvuilt over that thing while still obeying the no mining runes, it'll be a true succession megaproject requiring many years decades of stone imports, Maybe small surface quarries allowed for just the bridge?
