I need leather but all I have is kittens...
« on: December 15, 2007, 10:45:00 pm »

My question is, what do I get for butchering a kitten? Do I get bones, skull, meat, and most importantly, do I get a hide that can be made into leather?

Thanks to whichever sadistic person who tried this for fun answers this question.

EDIT: Why do I need kitten leather? Umm... Erm.. I need it for... Uhh... A leather-worker strange mood! Yes! That's it, a strange mood! A strange mood... Yes...

Yes, the kitten meat/bone/leather economy is a old tradition in the fortress.

All animals that you can butcher have skins.

For a low meat to leather ratio, you can't beat kittens/puppies.

But if you want more fat, bone, and meat you should get a herd of cows, horses or donkeys.

I am currently trying to capture a herd of hippos for my current fort.

I slaughter all newborn kittens out of hand. The immigrants will bring in plenty as pets to keep my vermin under control.

What is wrong with you people!?

I have never tried butchering a kitten.

No, really, I swear.

On a completely unrelated note, my hunters keep leaving the corpses of the things they kill halfway across the map, and my butchers seem not to want to collect them. Do I need some kind of stockpile for the hunters to haul their kills back to? Or can I even get to them before they rot if they're that far away?

Place a refuse stockpile under the corpse and add a butcher task to your butchery. The butcher will go retrieve it.

Reasonableman, if you have the dwarven labour to spare, you can also set "Collect Refuse from Outside" from the
  • ptions -> [R]efuse options.  That way, haulers will bring corpses to refuse piles, next to which you can build your butchery.  Butchers always recognize corpses in refuse piles, but of course you need to make sure they get to them before rot sets in.

The intruder arose, casting off its black cloak.  "Behold, stunted jesters!  It is I, Scuro!"  A jagged scar marked the goblin's face from eye to chin, his greasy mane gray and wild, and about his neck was the broken silver amulet, strapped together by a leather band.
