Dark Fortresses!

So I know every one wants to become Necromancer, but kept getting killed by the undead in the towers. So I wanted to see if any one else had discovered that Dark Fortresses sometimes have books scattered around them that "Contain the secrets of life and death", thus giving you the powers of necromancy.
From what I have put together, Dark Fortresses are forts that have been built or conquered by shady people. The perticular fort I visited had books stewn about the court yard, many concerning the camel brute Xon I picked up all the books but on was called "Extinction: Natural or Supernatural?". Reading this book did the same exact thing that the slabs do in the Necro towers.
Hope this helps. If I was a little vague feel free to ask questions. By the way I'm new to the forms, but (somewhat) familiar with Dwarf Fortress.

where did you find a dark fortress... was it just a normal human fort where a clown had set himself up as their lord?

The whole thing was very strange. I was trying to find a town when I stumbled upon this fort, except it was purple (both on fast travel and normal walking). Inside it was deserted but had Necromancer books scattered around. I suppose maybe the thing occupying it was under the fotress, I'll boot up DF and check it out.

It was necromancer tower, not a dark fortress.

No it was a Dark Fotress. Had the same layout, but it was purple. It even said it "Castle Something-Something, the Dark Fotress". I'll get it's real name when I get there.
FYI I'm using Toady's new bug fixes so I can safely travel, maybe it affects other things.

Ok so it's not purple on fast travel, but it is walking. Made of pitchblende block walls. Should I upload the save?
Mkay, found the door. Already two Necro books I didn't spot. They are " The Birth of a Camel Brute" and "We see Xan The Fair Dusts". I must have screwed up on names, Xan seems to be the Camel Brute.

dark fortresses are not supposed to "exist", like elven retreats or mountainhomes.

although, i did plan on modding gobbos to build necro towers when i update goblin fortress.

Dark Fortresses are goblin fortresses...

Ah sorry, I'm a newb. So maybe it was just a castle with Necro books? Nah. I'll continue exploring but save scum in case Xan gets pissed and beats me to death with my own skeleton minion.

Update: Found a stair case that leads to a room filled with four statues. By the way, I'm typing this as I go along, so don't think I'm making it up. I'm also typing an an iPad so forgive errors.

Back room that leads to nothing and another loot room. No camel brutes or Necromancers.

Sorry about this triple post, I don't use forms often. But I found a mother load of loot rooms and this skeleton which is not a companion nor can I talk to. I'm going throw a book at it and see what happens.
Update: It's considered an ally, but is not listed under companions, also can't talk to it. My exploration is going nowhere and people seem to be losing interest.

Well I have not read all the books, and I only learned The Secrets of Life and Death. If that's another Necro power then no, I haven't.

The secrets of life and death are what Aachen was referring to. There aren't any other necromancer powers yet.

Anyway, Dark Towers/Fortresses are where the goblins live. When they still appeared in-game and could be visited, they were obsidian towers of varying height, with possibly more than one in the same area. Necromancer Towers are the towers that necromancers force their zombie slaves to build for them after they learn the secrets of life and death and run away from society.
