Its not guaranteed, but its highly likely you'll eventually get at least one vampire, provided there are any dwarf vampires (usually are).

You actually can. I'm trying to make an all vampire fortress, I'm at pop 90 and not one vampire.

I think my world is completely devoid of Vampires, Necromancers and Were-beasts. Namely because I was an idiot and didn't want to wait for world gen and stopped it at 5 before getting an elegant fortress design. started.

Remember that you need a sheriff (and a jail) to hand out a sentence - and I've seen sheriffs that do not order a hammering for vampires, but instead gave them extraordinarily long prison time. My method of dealing with vampires is usually to draft them into my military and have them stationed out in a burrow far from the fortress. That way there's no blood for them to drink except that of invaders - and most vampires are really good at fighting.

It's depressing. I've had SO many potential vampires, they've got all the effects; ridiculously good reflexes, fast healing, few wounds at any point, yet when I do my research, they're ALWAYS vanilla dwarves.

Seriously though, I got one, and I was paying pretty close attention to the details on my migrants.
