What's the deal with were-beasts?
« on: February 19, 2012, 08:25:27 am »

So, after a bit of a hiatus from dwarf fortress I get dragged back in by a friend's succession fort. Having not played since shortly after rain would fall hard enough to dismember dwarves, it takes me a few minutes to get back into the swing of things. And then this happens:

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

I thought just boarding up the entrance would work, but now my administrator is stuck outside and there's just been an incursion of migrants. How dangerous/virulent are were-beasts in this version? Is my fort doomed? Should I get every dwarf that's outside the fort to throw themselves into magma?

To make matters worse, I can't seem to find where the were-elephant has snuck off too...

The big change since the previous version is that there's a lunar cycle now and were-beasts obey this. They (and any infected) will only be active for a few in-game days and they will have a large enough stat boost that they can do some damage within this time limit.

Congrats, Psieye. This is the first time I've seen a derailed thread get put back on the rails.

It's incredibly dangerous, it's also probably going to turn back long before it gets to your fortress.

Anyone else sensing shades of Boatmurdered here?

Socks inspire the same sort of emotions in dwarfs that Helen of Troy inspired in the Achaean Greeks. Although it is said that Helen's face launched a thousand ships, socks have surely launched a million ultimately-fatal Store Owned Item tasks.

What spreads the were-beast syndrome? Is it only when the moon is full, everything infected transforms and attacks which can infect others?

EDIT: ...and how can I check who has been bitten?

Too bad I've read this just now (about the combat log). I've had one of my dwarfs chopping woods outside, and all of the sudden a werehyena appears close to him. I write him off as one of the necessery casualties to save the rest of the fort. While I was appointing everyone to the burrows I did not notice that this dwarf (although he was partially in his civilian clothing) survived for a few moments. Then I've checked his equipment and noticed that he was one of the lucky ones that had the adamantine battle axe. Well... few swings over this beast and the hyena was dead... BUT... my dwarf was wounded... And might I add, he was the only Great warior at that time... well, good thing you can wield battle axe with only one hand cos he was missing the entire left arm.
Anyways... I bring him to my fort, and marked my self one month to build him some confy secluded room. It was simmilar in design like my vamp room, but this time he had to have some food and drinks. Well... one month passed, nothing yet. Two months and BOOM - but not him - another were heyena outside. This time he ran away. Good thing is that he did not notice my king who was stralling outside about 30 blocks away from him. Well.. either that or he saw my Vamp squad of 7 gaining on him (good armor and adamantine weapons). BUT my one-armed dwarf was still there in his room - he did not change, and he still had a missing arm.

Do you think that I can now safelly assume that he was not bitten (maybe hyena scratched him so hard, his arm fell off)?

There hasn't been a whole lot of science on werewolf infection. I have a theory that a bite that doesn't break the skin will never result in infection, even if the creature inflicts damage by shaking. It may have bitten his hand but only bruised it and then tore it off by shaking.

Were-beasts hidden in your population can be extremely deadly, as anyone that is involved in a fight with the beast will likely be infected. Survivors of attacks will be fully healed when they transform. This in turns just spirals as more and more become were-beasts. As long as you can safely secure the infected and keep track of anyone that might also get infected from fighting, you'll do fine.

The invader were-beasts leave the map once they turn back into the non were-creature form. Often times the presence of a were-beast entering the map ends up being uneventful for me. They get halfway to the fort entrance and revert, only to leave the map. I might have to make a hermit or two near the map edge to lure and trap the beast so it can actually do something. I need to test them and learn from them like I did with thralls. That was FUN.

Ok, my humble addition to were-science: Around half years after by great axedwarf got his hand riped of by were-hyena and he still did not change (even though there was once some other random hyena on the surface, he did not change).
So, I conclude, that it is maybe enough to have your dwarf quarantine for one month and then to release him if he does not change.
Only I am not sure if he needs to actually SEE the full moon? After all.. he was down underground - maybe that's why he did not change?

All I can speculate is that his arm was bitten but because it was torn off the disease never reached his body. The torn limb then regrew into a full werebeast by moonlight.

You might have the first documented survivor of a were-bite EVER (well in terms of the dwarf not getting infected, in my fortress being a werewolf is a death sentence)  . Congrats.

Now that you say it like that, I do feel a bit sad for wanting this fortress to be destoryed for being very boring... hmmm... Now when you mentioned it... what did happen to that arm... As I recall, it was dragged to the refuse pile. After some time, I was not able to find it... I should check if there are some +dwarven upper arm bone bolts+ laying around (if marksmen did not already shoot them away) :D

You should send him out again and see if you can have his evil doppelganger tear off his other arm!

It will be like the bible only with werewolfs!!!

P.S.
As for bolts your dorfs wont make them out of other dwarves. If you have any caskets set up for burial check those but I am pretty sure the arm can't be in the refuse pile, it has to go into the graveyard pile or a casket (albeit I am not sure if its appropriate to place it in the casket since the dorf who lost it is still alive)
