So how haunted will my fortress end up?
« on: February 19, 2012, 06:41:12 am »

So, I have/had an fortress going on a glacier. Things were good, had plenty of food and booze, and things were nice and peaceful. Though slow going for setup. I didn't mind though. Had plenty of resources.

Had a good thing going.

Then I got Migrants. Okay, not a problem. Still plenty of resources.

Then, I got MORE migrants. Still not a problem, but I need to hurry up on being able to plant crops and such for food and booze making.

Then I got a demented clown car's worth of migrants. Uh oh.

They proceeded to eat and drink all my food and booze.

And for the last few hours I have watched my dwarves starve and die of thirst. I had a brief reprieve when some fruity elves showed up and I robbed them blind.

But, its been epic death inbetween a frantic and failed search for the caverns for some water. Inbetween all the death and dwarves going insane. And a game of "where have they died now?".

I ordered the meeting area to the corpse pile tomb to cut down on time.

But, since I put so much time and effort into this fortress. I plan to reclaim. And I hear that ghosts will remain even after reclaiming unless you bury them. If that's true. How bad can I expect a fortress with 50+ dead dwarves to be?

Also, for science, should I go for broke and try to make it the most haunted place I can?

EDIT: One of my Migrants has turned out to be a vampire, and thus, saved the fortress from falling. I can continue working until more tasty morsel..I mean, help arrives.

The ghosts show up in spurts. Swordthunders taught me that when one group is put to rest, another rises.

And your will probably be the VERY violent angry kind, throwing shit around and pelting the dwarves with stuff.

I recommend gathering the dead in the caverns, lock it with a drawbridge, and lock the main enterance before the last one dies to reduce item scattering.

How can people manage to NOT get 1000+ worth of drinks? Plump helmets are so easy mode.

That won't be a problem, the main entrance is a surface hatch. I can and might as well just lock it right now while they are all mostly in the surface tomb.

Not enough seeds. Too many mouths to water.

Heh, well, in my case its simple. No water, and no muddy ground. As I haven't found any caverns. And everyone is dieing. And all my miners are dead from dehydration.

If you have an aquifier on the embark - use this as a watersource. Moreover water is one of the best weapons on the embark like that.

And bury as many as you can before the fort is gone. I once buried over 80 of dwarwes in one of my forts and it wasn't that bad, as I finished I still had 2 adult dwarwes and 3 children.

You can make it!

Cheers :]

Welcome to the mad, mad world of RAW errors or duplication. Somewhere you have files which dont quite add up, and crazy shit happens(..) There are instances of this where you can adventure as a fly, or embark with wagonmeat, wearing shoes made of burning soap(..)

DF is so awesome that it doesnt just crash, it crates batshit crazy worlds where intelligent chairs farm dragons and make houses out of thier toenails.

Heh, if I had an aquifer, I'd be alright. I PROBABLY should have chose the Glacier that had one huh?. But nope. Ole DungeonDwarf was all like "Nope, hate dealing with Aquifer's, gonna embark where there are none!".

Also, I dunno, I kinda like the idea of turning this place into a haunted fortress.

The screams of the damned chilling the very souls of all dwarf's who dare set foot into it's icy walls

Choose a partial aquifier embark so the aquifier water is only under a certain part of the embark area. Make a cistern there, a pump station, small keep with all essentials needed for the pump operators/mechanics to live there for a long time (just in case if shit hits the fan and something bad happens you want that fresh water anyway).

Also - death to dehydration may be better than drinking 0% alcohol water for your dwarves so it's all fine if they die :D

True, I just wasn't expecting to get the clown car from hell's worth of migrants. But, it doesn't matter now. They're all dead now, except for the vampire that was hidden among them. And I mean HIDDEN.

She didn't even get to make herself known through murder.

BUT, she was an unexpected boon. My fortress stays alive. And I have an immortal slave to do my bidding.

No need to eat, sleep, drink. Just work, work, work. Some people hate vampires. Me, well, I'm opening a vampire sweat shop as we speak.

I don't think glaciers have caverns? I tried a glacier fort once and ended up with no way to grow crops. I dug all the way down to the magma sea and never hit any caverns.

Was there also no soil and no surface plants? You don't need irrigation for underground farms in soil.

It's possible to 'miss' the caverns because you dug through a solid rock section. It's also possible to gen a world without caverns. Glaciers always not having caverns is unheard of.

Congrats, Psieye. This is the first time I've seen a derailed thread get put back on the rails.

Truth be told, I can't even remember. I saw "No Aquifer's" and I think "Little Soil" and I pretty much jumped on it. Cause I hate Aquifer's, and me being so out of practice with the game didn't remember ice could be used as building material.

But it's cool. I have a vampire labor now. I have all the time in the world to find the caverns and get things fixed.

It didn't. She was the last one standing till the next Migrant wave showed up about 10-15 minutes later. Fortress's CAN keep going if you have nothing but vampires. Which is awesome.
