Earth Tree
« on: February 19, 2012, 01:06:31 am »

I think the elves need to play a more active role in dwarf fortress. This feature would introduce a naturally forming mega structure that interacts with the events in a fortress. The elves would come and plant a sapling in your fortress, a special sapping that the they had bred specifically for your fortress's biome. This sapling would grow into a giant "Earth Tree" or "Gaia tree". It would be presented as a present from their civilization, but you would not have the option to refuse it.

Formation:
-Elven diplomat comes when reputation is sufficiently high (Very few fell tree jobs, profitable trade between your civilization and theirs)
-Diplomat plants tree in suitable location and makes a special announcement
-Tree should start out as a normal sapling
-Growth should be rapid at first, slowing exponentially until it is mature after about 50? years
-The tree and it's root system should grow around and over buildings and items, destroying anything in it's way.

Features:
-Logs should fall below the tree during wind/rain/snow storms. The giant branches would be the size of normal tree trunks (thus explaining how elves have access to wooden items without killing trees). Logs should begin falling after 30? years.
-If the tree dies for any reason then elves will declare war
-Advanced forest retreats past a certain age should have giant trees with elves living in them.

I think this is a little too slow.  A long lived fortress makes it into the 20's or so, you don't get that many older than that.

Ehh, I'm not sure how I feel about elves and giant trees. I picture them living in tents and hovels more then inside giant trees. Maybe tree-forts up in the branches of giant trees, but not actually hollowing them out and living in them.

You can't really carve up a tree without killing it and I don't picture elves doing that.

Also, I think trees are too small as it is, there should be narrow multi-tile trees maybe just 2 to 5 z-levels up, that produce a corresponding amount of lumber for felling them.

Of course I imagine this is on the way anyways.

Maybe surface trees could grow that slow but I could see a towercap fully growing (about human size) in like a month. That way it would be sort of a nuisance. And the elves would have a reason to not want you to hack away all their earth mother horse malarky.

Actually, some trees such as oaks etc. can survive just ok being hollowed, it's only the outer parts of the trunk and bark that's really alive and growing. The rest of the inside is in many cases slowly being eaten up by bugs without it having any/much negative effect on the tree, and many of them do end up completely hollow and still survive. So elves living inside huge magical trees isn't that farfetched ^^

Yet another way that elves are like bugs.

6 year necro!
(Planned, Mythgen seems to have earrh-tree type structures). And otherwise big trees just for living in made it a couple of years after the last post in this thread.
