Just before the new DF version came out, I started a game on the most perfect embark ever.  12+ layers full of limestone for flux.  Lots of iron ore.  Some tetrahedrite.  Some native silver, native gold, and native platinum.  I got a skill level 14 or so Weaponsmith as a migrant early on.  Ditto for a skill level 10 or so armorsmith and also a high-level metalcrafter.  (That one year when the dwarven traders really wanted goblets... well, my fortress this embark is quite wealthy now.)

Downsides for this embark:  No human traders (only dwarves and elves), and a brook instead of a river.

While exploring the caverns...

I have a magma sea on Z-level -16.  It goes down to level -38 or so.

Bearing in mind that I have never done anything with magma yet... what do I do with this wonder?

You're lucky. I've got layers and layers of limestone, around 10 that are completely empty. The odd gem. Not a single piece of metal in them.

You can build magma forges for taking care of every little smelting and forging job which doesn't explicitly require coke. Very useful as you no longer have to constantly dig for Bituminous or Lignite.

Also, a save of this wonderful location would be nice.

If you want to bring magma up to the surface level (say as a for defense measure) then you are going to need pump stacks going all the way down to the magma sea.  Normally this is pretty difficult, but your magma sea is unusually close to the surface.  It will still take a lot of power though.  I recommend constructing an elaborate hydro-power plant on the brook, getting as many water wheels as you need. 

The materials for the pump should ideally be magma safe.  Bauxite is ideal for the block, but most kinds of stone will work.  The pipe and screw will need to be safe as well.  I recommend iron or steel for those. 

But as has been mentioned, magma is ideal for making magma forges and magma smelters.  They greatly ease metal production.  To build one, you will need a platform one floor above some live magma.  You will need to put a few holes in the platform which the magma powered furnaces will go right on top of.  It is best to make these holes on the spots which will be impassible in the resulting furnace or workshop (the spots which are darker when placing it) so that dwarves do not accidentally fall in if startled by something.

I don't have a save of the initial embark, sadly, so the fortress has been around for a number of years.  (I know that my fortress design pretty much sucks; if anyone wants to recommend ways to improve it, feel free.  For example, my dwarven bedrooms definitely need work.)
