1, 3, and four. Not necessarily in that order, spaced in between lots and lots of failures.

A friend suggested it to me a while ago, so I tried and failed.

Came back recently, read the afteractionreport tutorial and now understand the game. More importantly, it left me well equipped to figure out some of the oddities of DF without needing to consult the wiki or forums (which I use now I've got the basics down).

If anything, the afteractionreport was too bloody detailed. I wish I'd stuck with trying to figure it out myself sometimes, since I feel like I missed out on a lot of Fun!

In the beginning when ASCll was poison to my brain I could even now what proportion the game was. I was like "Oh wait, this little face is a city right? How I build a market place? ..." then: Urist McSettler died of thirst X7

I climbs up the difficulty curve mountain with nothing but my damn bare hands and a backpack full of wiki pages.
I'm still not at the top yet, I've more or less found a tiny alcove about halfway up and I'm huddling in it waiting for the Titans and FBs to go away while I figure out how to make a successful military.

At least the hairy little bums don't die of hunger and thirst anymore. Now they get the joy of having their eyes melted from their sockets while a giant quadrupedal scorpion made of cubic zirconium stabs them in the chest with a !!Sheep Wool Sock!!.

I learned to play through the wiki and a lot of aquifer and magma flooding. It took me around 3 months to find out the aquifers gave out infinite water. Oh and then there was my first attempt on making a magma trap..... didn't end too well  :'(.

Mostly wiki, and some of the after action reporter. But what really broke the ice was when I watched a Lets Play of the Fallout mod. It may have been Fallout but I got most of the basics from that.

My cousin told me about the game, but I didn't have the internet so I downloaded it at the library.  Took it home. Installed. Took the thirty seconds to read the ingame documentation. Flooded the world (this was back in 2D when you could perma-flood the world).  I got pissed off and went back to ADOM until the next time I could get to the internet, when I started saving pages and pages of the wiki.

Somehow, that fills me more with dread than anticipation.  It's like being told that someone's exhuming your favorite grandparent and they're going to try to make her into a cyborg stripper.

Captain Duck's 40d tutorial, the Wiki, and lots of trial and error :)

My first fort ended with everyone dying of starvation because I hadn't figured out farming.  The second one died of dehydration because I hadn't figured out brewing.  The third died from goblins because I hadn't figured out smelting.  Turns out ten wrestlers aren't that great at fending off a goblin siege wearing iron armor and weapons.

The next fort... Survived.  Till I ran the civ into extinction via tantrum spirals and poor working conditions, anyway.

"Learn Dwarf Fortress?"

I've been playing for more than a year now, and I still have no idea what I'm doing  :P.

But seriously, the wiki was (and still is) a huge help to me, at least for the controls and many of the specifics of play (the list of magma-safe stones).  The forums taught me how to be a dwarf.

I installed it and started playing.  When I was totally baffled I searched the forum, and eventually I found the Wiki, but the initial playing which hooked me on the game was done without any outside help.

Captain Duck, the Wiki, a friend I knew over IRC, and messing around in the labyrinthine menu's until something started to work.

I hazard to say I'm fairly decent at this game.
