my forts always seem to die form a mixture of the ghosts of angry migrants and god damn goblin ambushes before hitting 120 dwarfs.

I envy you...

Other

Tried playing long ago and quickly gave up. Then I stumbled across the boatmurdered story and that convinced me to give it another shot. Since then, I just try to pick up something new with each fort I play and have gradually gotten the hang of most some of it. It's really not my type of game, but I can't seem to not play it...

mixture of wiki, own attempts and confusion with a sprinkling of forum help, until eventually (many deaths later) understanding hit.

So that's how you do it.... sorry dwarves.

For me it was a mixture of Captainduck but that was mainly for the basics. Everything else was trail and error. To be honest I'm still figuring stuff out :P

TinyPirate's tutorial for me.
I had lots of Fun when a war dog ripped a berserk dwarf to shreds and I couldn't figure out how to get the rotting dwarf chunks out of the dining hall.

Other, I just kept hammering at it. It helps to think in terms of goals when learning anything, instead of just opening the game and going "...what do ai DOOOO! Whear do ai goooo?!?" Think "Alright, well, the three things necessary for survival are food, drink, shelter..." And then get to it!

I try to get a squad to train and all they do is sit there... Archery range (assigned), check, bolts, check, crossbows, check, squad set to train, check, dwarfs training, NOPE.

Have you set the minimum number of Dwarves to train the Schedule? Either that, or they need quivers, OR the quivers you have are full of arrows/bolts they're not allowed to use. Either way the solution is to make moar.

I watched 51ppycup's video tutorials first, but I also used the After Action Reporter guide while I was playing.

Originally, I taught myself, but I didn't learn much that way. I stopped playing for awhile then recently picked it back up and had to relearn everything. This time I knew about the Wiki though and have used that. Also I have been using the forums now.

I read almost all the information on the wiki before I started a game, I think I spent most of my free time the first four days after I learned about the game just reading the wiki. Then it took me like 2 embarks to have a functional fortress, one where all the dwarves aren't tantruming or dying of starvation.

My friend introduced me to the game, but was a dick and never told me how to play. Ahh... The nights I spend studying the wiki for the information I needed.

I watched DJrodW's video tutorials, tried a fort, and promptly realized that the tutorials had only taught me the controls. Well, that's all that stuck. So I basically learned DF via trial-and-error. Still can't get a (good) military up and running, but the civilian side of my forts runs smoothly. I'm still remarkably bad at forcing high-value artifacts, though, and have only gotten steel in one fort.

Started off by hitting random keys, found out how to dig, tried to use (i) zones as (p) stockpiles.
Then I found out about tilesets. Mayday was, and still is, my favorite.
Then I found afteraction, that helped me out a lot.
Stayed like that for a long time, then found dwarf therapist. I use it sometimes, but I'd rather set jobs manually through (v)

Taught myself...eventually. I remember my first fort.. i just engraved the outer edge of the 2d mountain and picked herbs. Had no clue on how to dig or do anything else. Back then the wiki was nearly non existent and the game was much harder where you had barely any embark points and farming was difficult. 2006 was harder at the start and then got easier it probably scared alot of people off playing. 2012 is just ez mode and you choose the difficulty by digging down more and more.
