And then they will tear us to shreds.
Aye. But it will be  pretty sweet ride up until that point.

Imagine the will it took to create a fortress like this. And what have you elves built? Nothing. You can only loot and break. You're not dwarves!! You're just termites at Versailles.

It's not that I don't suffer, it's that I know the unimportance of suffering, I know that pain is to be fought and thrown aside, not to be accepted as part of one's soul and as a permanent scar across one's view of existence.

By trial and error, obviously. It wasn't that hard, since I had significant experience with roguelikes - my third fort was successful enough, dying from boredom rather than dangers of the world.

wiki and trial and error. the wiki for the more confusing stuff like some interface issues and trial and error for the rest it took a long time to really get some stuff but i had fun along the way. also at the very beginning i used stonesense running next to the main window as a reference until i really understood the ascii i see it now but the first time it looked beyond crazy.

I'd just like to point out the words here.  This is not "how did you learn about DF".  This is "how did you learn to play DF".

I skimmed, My bad.

Kept playing till the fortresses stopped dying of thirst. Trial and error basically with only wiki information on organizing defenses.

I learned through stubbornness and reading Dwarf Fortress Generals. I learned about the game when I was reading a thread about games that should have achievements, someone posted a massive list of theoretical DF ones.

Needless to say after seeing the many, many ways to have "FUN" I had to find and try it.

I learned it trough trial and error mostly.
Was already "playing" (well, more like trying not to die in my first year) for a week before I even started up the wiki. (I'm stubborn like that)
After you have understood the basics and are able to keep them fed and drunk getting to the other stuff trough trial and error isn't even that hard any more. Actually surviving combat was the next big step (the military screen not so much, I find that pretty well made and easy to use...)

I only used the wiki for finding out details like:
- How do I make (insert metal here) again?
- What was X worth again?

Stuff like that.

I started off with 5ippy cup's 9 hour long video tutorial on Youtube, an online dictionary and the Wiki offcourse, which I still use.
Took me about three or four embarks to get the basics. I used to start on islands to prevent sieges and concentrate on the economy first. Afterwards a couple more embarks lost to goblins attacks and now I'm fine... sort of.
I still tend to get my militia up too late though and have lost many very nice locations to that flaw in my playstile. ( for instance: my last costal embark was sitting on multiple layers of natural obsidian full of gold and iron veins....lost it to a seamonster, cause I didn't notice that the ocean biome was evil)
Somehow I don't like melees, so usually I go for a overground fortress with a traped secondary entrance, some self bred beasts and archers. But I guess I'm just to slow to pull it off correctly.
Nevertheless, I'm having FUN with it for a year now and still love it.

Mainly trial and error and the wiki. Probably spent hours trying to figure out how military works

A combination of the wiki, the forums, a friend, and just playing the game. Surprisingly I think my 3rd or 4th fortress had a successful military and loads of industries. I tend to either learn things fast, or never understand them at all... :S

I think it's the way towns develop now. In the beginning, people move into a town. Then they start producing tables, which results in more and more tables. Soon tables represent a significant portion of the population, they start lobbying for new laws and regulations, putting people to greater and greater disadvantage...
Link for full quote. 'tis mighty funny.

I haven't really 'learnt' how to play DF successfully yet, despite playing for several weeks, my forts always seem to die from a mixture of the ghosts of angry migrants and god damn goblin ambushes before hitting 120 dwarfs. The wiki and forums have helped allot with giving me the inspiration to do epic and dwarfy things that have inevitably led to my downfall due to me being over ambitious, so you could say the wiki and the forums are teaching me how to commit suicide in the most spectacular fashion which although isn't inherently helpful is very fun ;D.
