Button mashing and a lot of shouting, "WHY LITTLE MANS STARVED?!"

No, really.  My first attempts were pointless meanderings of digging and trying to stockpile.  At some point it all kinda came together, and then I had a minotaur for a mayor.  My lessons in fortress management were built on the corpses of endless dwarves.

That sounds almost EXACTLY like my very first 40D fortress back before I had graphics packs.

Looking back, it was delicious chaos. My dwarves starving, clambering for vermin, my hunter being injured and lost somewhere and me not knowing what the hell to do. My friends who taught me very little, and expected me to understand the game from the start.

Lets see..Hunter died of thirst. One of them went berserk, chased down one of his friends ripped his arm off. Think he ate it. Got a comment of "Om nom nom, Dwarf burgers!" from my one friend. The others mostly starved to death. Migrants showed up as the Berserk one was still on his rampage. And I abandoned the fortress at that point.

I was not dwarfy enough back then to play out the havoc to its bitter end.

Not like these days, and watching my last two settlements be anihilated by Zombies and become them. Course it was AWESOME. Especially when the one military dwarf spent like a week+ fighting over 10 Zombies with an axe at once before she died. Wish I had gotten that combat log like I did the Woodcutters earlier fight. But this was 39 pages worth.

Sure, won't get a truly representative sample, but I am curious non-the-less. My first tutorial has cleared more than 750,000 page views now. I think a surprisingly large number of gamers have given DF a go!

Trial and error, followed by the wiki for less important details (e.g. why my dwarves were all flashing with blue and red arrows).

Watched Captain Duck's videos, then played 31.12, and i have not experienced FUN (bugged sieges, no FBs, it was boring). Magmawiki for anything else. Easymode ever since.

I wish i could erase my memory, start over, and only use trial and error. SCIENCE FTW

Funny story. I ran into Dwarf Fortress when the latest version was 0.31.12.

It wasn't until I'd gotten the hang of basic stuff like food and drink that I started wondering why goblins hadn't killed me yet.

The wiki helped me with a lots of things after that, but I can't help but wonder how much more Fun it would've been if I'd learned about the game at any other point in time.
Forts 2 and 3, with .31.14, did have rather abrupt endings, but by then I could already focus just on how to deal with goblins.

So basically, my feelings are pretty similar to gzoker's, who posted while I was typing this.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chronology_of_god_video_games ;)

Can't really remember if it was that page, but it was wikipedia surfing that led here.

Let no wiki guide you. I say let us carry the fun with us. Let a thousand dwarves die for every one that lives. We will climb to victory atop a mountain of our dead—for that is the Dwarf way.

Imagine the will it took to create a fortress like this. And what have you elves built? Nothing. You can only loot and break. You're not dwarves!! You're just termites at Versailles.

It's not that I don't suffer, it's that I know the unimportance of suffering, I know that pain is to be fought and thrown aside, not to be accepted as part of one's soul and as a permanent scar across one's view of existence.

A mountain of dwarf-husks... *shudders* It's this kind of thing that keeps me awake nights...
