Buying food in hamlets and villages
« on: February 18, 2012, 05:39:06 pm »

Considering that they're often surrounded by farmland, does anyone else think it would be a good idea to have a small farmers market (maybe just 1 outdoor merchant) occasionally appear to sell food? It makes sense to me, though I haven't thought too much about the impact on gameplay.

One variation I'm thinking of is that there could be a <1 probability of one appearing in any given settlement for any given day.

Any thoughts?

Not really a fan of it. The town market is supposed to be the hub for all the hamlets and villages. For me mostly, there are far far too many shops in the game now. When you've got 10 to 15 food shops in the town and enough meat at the market to build your own fortress out of it...

Yeah. Right now, I want shops to matter and for me to need to use them. That's never going to happen with the current number of them in cities. So, I'd actually prefer less shops.

I don't really care about having merchants in hamlets, I just cut up whatever animals ambush me and roast them over a fire.

Great idea!
They should be selling only what makes sense (so if they have endless potatoe-fields, they almost only sell potatoes)
The shops in towns should be more structured, and you shouldn't have to go pick up what you buy.

I'd say some shops need to appear in hamlets, less in towns. And we need more kinds of shop than them all being Cloth Clothes... etc.
But hey, they're new. The more Toady messes around with these new settlements and populations and the economy, the more stable it will become.

I think it's the way towns develop now. In the beginning, people move into a town. Then they start producing tables, which results in more and more tables. Soon tables represent a significant portion of the population, they start lobbying for new laws and regulations, putting people to greater and greater disadvantage...

You don't have to pick up what you buy anymore.
