Milking?
« on: November 06, 2007, 11:35:00 pm »

None of my animals are able to be milked?

I have posessed cows and two-humped camels, both male and female, but every time I attempted to milk any animals via the Farmer's Workshop, it returned the same message about "needing unrotten milkable item."

Uh... what?

Animals can't be milked yet. To milk something it has to be carryable, and the only milkable thing you can carry is a purring maggot. You get them by putting traps in a chasm.

I haven't tried getting them yet in this version, though.

Wouldn't want to milk the males even if it were possible, would you?

Anyways, in the last version the only animals that could be milked were purring maggots.

Shouldn't cows have been made milkable before the maggots? This setup seems kind of counter-intuitive to me, but maybe I'm just weird.

why the hell would a dwarf milk a cow, you ethnocentric humanist?!  maybe if it was an albino cave cow or something, but these are DWARFS!  the only good cheese is purring maggot cheese!

Exactly, the game isn't called Human Town. This is Dwarf Fortress!

Same reason underground farming went in before aboveground farming, and digging went in before wall-building.

It just seems wierd to have camel and cow milk and cheeses and not be able to make them, to me.

Oh, well.

those are novelty items that you can buy as trade goods from the lesser races.  isnt it cute to see the silly things those surface dwellers think of as food?  those crazy tall people will eat the zanyest junk.

But purring maggots aren't mammals, so why can they be milked?

Maybe "purring maggot" is a misnomer like "starfish" or "koala bear." If it were actually a maggot, it would eventually grow into an adult form-- maggots are generally considered to be a larval phase, as far as I know.

Or maybe the "milk" is actually some sort of other secretion, like honey.

Milked? I thought that meant "juiced"

Not just trade goods from the "lesser races" anymore -- I've had dwarven traders try to pedal camel cheese in this version.
