Please add an option to disable boogeymen at worldgen
« on: February 18, 2012, 04:46:42 pm »

Hello,

I would really, really like to see the option to disable boogeymen in adventure mode without getting rid of all night creature types.

It's not because they are too hard, or too easy or that I want to sleep at night with impunity. It is a matter of taste.

I don't like the boogeymen, period. If my adventurers are going to get killed because they decided to sleep out at night alone, I'd much rather it be due to wild animals, bandits, savage monsters, and the like, which seems to happen often enough anyways. It's not that I don't like the idea of dangerous creatures stalking the night. I'm really fine with that.

But swarms of boogeymen automagically teleporting to the location of any hapless traveller who happens to be out after sunset?
What, do they molest the livestock as well? And what about the wildlife? I personally just find it kind of stupid.

I might be the only person who feels this way, but I really wish that an option is added to disable these things at worldgen.

Thanks.

[edit: In no way do I mean to belittle the awesome work that has gone into enhancing adventure mode. I really want to thank you all for bringing us some of that world outside the fortress, to explore. The above is just something I haven't been able to get off my mind for a while.]

Hear, hear!

Of the many things in DF, and considering the vast panoply of options and awesomenesses, bogiemen stand out as an almost vestigial "mechanic". They were useful once, to show off the night creatures, but now they are simply irritating and game-y remnants of DF-that-was.

I agree with Urist. Steampunk is like Darth Vader winning Holland's Next Top Model. It would be awesome but not something I'd like in this game.
Unfortunately dying involves the amputation of the entire body from the dwarf.

I'm sure bogeymen will be changed/replaced to be less overkill eventually. Right now, they're a game-ender for even the most hardcore adventurers. Still, even walking around with a simple peasant will stop them from getting you, so that's good.

It's in there.   Set Bogeyman Number to 0.

It's in there.   Set Bogeyman Number to 0.

This. It's in Advanced Worldgen.

[Edit: Sorry, I misread you.

Huh, I must have missed that. I knew there was a night creature type number, but this must be new. Thanks for pointing this out!

I guess this thread can be closed now.]

It would be nice if a campfire kept them away, as well as other critters so you could sleep for a few hours in peace anywhere.

Well you could technically make a campfire wall, that would certainly stop bogeymen.

You can't fast travel with enemies around you, so good luck getting out ;)

And some fly

Edit; Lol i got owned, sorry i didint know that tit was in advanced world gen, most of the time i just generate worlds the old fashoned way, however it would be nice if it were in the files somewere so i could generate a world with ease.

But swarms of boogeymen automagically teleporting to the location of any hapless traveller who happens to be out after sunset?

This, this this this 1000000 times over.

I mean, in a game so in-depth as this, i dont want my vampire-slaying minatoar-owning hero to just get killed by some make-beleive creature. I mean really, how satisfying is it to hear that your mighty hero was killed by a damn boogy man.... it just doesint feel right.

Edit; wow, i got owned there, i feel like a complete idiot. I didint know it was in advanced world gen, i just make worlds the old fashoned way and accept'em as is, however it would be nice if it were in the files somewere so i could generate a new world with ease.

If there were gameplay options, this should definatly be one.

Hardcore adventurers can easily kill bogeyman. Change your attack preferences to always charge. Charge and knock the bogeymen over, and then hack off what you can before they stand back up. repeat until all dead.

I've found with a good biting skill that biting their heads, latching on, and shaking will kill them about one in three times in two moves.

Ha!  That's my secret to outrunning the bogeymen who are faster than me when I just started and I am not skilled enough to fight them yet.

I just charge them then run away while they are getting up.

I personally like boogeymen..
I can just imagine these peasants huddled together at night in their mud huts speaking ominously about people being snatched away after dark  :P
