Finding places?
« on: February 18, 2012, 03:52:32 pm »

 Hello, there.

How do the resplendent denizens of these forums manage to find villages and whatnot? I took a quest from my home village to take on a bandit, did so, and returned home using the map and direction indicators, only to find that... the village is nowhere to be found. In fact.. this is true of every village I visit. When I've pinpointed the location and the on-screen indicator is saying *** - TSK, I find myself in the middle of nowhere, with no villages anywhere in sight. No matter where I explore in any direction, there's no village...

I agree with Urist. Steampunk is like Darth Vader winning Holland's Next Top Model. It would be awesome but not something I'd like in this game.
Unfortunately dying involves the amputation of the entire body from the dwarf.

You might be heading to settlements of races other than human, who's settlements, at the moment, do not appear. Other than that, no idea.

Dwarven Science: We do what we must, because, we're bored.

Every few miles, [the dwarves] stop the cart.  One of the dwarfs (sic) gets off, digs a hole down below the dirt layers, licks the bedrock, and then they know exactly where they are.  It's called GPS: Geological Piquancy Sampling.

Oh! Well, that's interesting and useful, but the settlement was there when I left it.

Don't know if this will help but reporting to any member of the civ in any of the settlements will mark the quest as completed. If you need to find a member of that civ use 'm' on the travel map to cycle to the info screen which should tell you if your moving over an area with houses in it. They should be around the area of the quest if it was something like a bogeyman or bandit camp. Hope this can help!

Little dots. The same ones used for stones, which indicate a settlement.

Can't. The entire Dwarf Fortress window appears as a white space. Very odd. I'll try giving a more accurate description when I hit a town again.

Never mind!

While the quest direction indicator was absolutely useless, I worked out that I hadn't been retuning exactly, and that the little blobs don't indicate habitation, but the huge list of shops -does-.
