Oh my. This further cements my belief that geology was a good choice for a study. :P
It would be super cool if we could do things like this in DF, nothing short of. Or rather, it would be hot stuff. (HE HE HE i regret nothing)

Well, at least this proves that dorfs escaping from a magma flow with only minor burns are actually plausible. I mean, holy shit, those guys are walking over 1 inch thick crust of cooling lava in normal hiking boots...

Not neccesairly. Lava in those photos is almost completely cooled.

I think this thread should have been titled "realistic lava." I think magma in confined spaces would be a tad more dangerous than this.

Generally it doesn't evaporate either.

Yeah, but we'd need support for partial rock walls or... obsidian trails... or something before lava starts behaving like lava when it cools.

I'm curious what the barely conscious ai wrote about.
Well that went better than expected.  He went nuts and punched a rabbit to death, then the dogs and the whole dining hall ripped him to shreds.

I would point out that the lava they are talking about in that article is highly mafic.

Mafic lava, like the stuff coming out on the ocean floor in deep sea trenches or on constantly volcanically active islands like Hawaii or Iceland are very thick, viscous, slow-moving, and relatively safe forms of lava that frequently pool up in areas where the Earth's crust is relatively thin and magma can travel from the core to points of release relatively quickly.

Compare this to a Mt. Vesuvius-style felsic volcanic vent, which is far less viscous and typically under pressure, and liable to be the "explode and kill everything in a 50-mile radius and choke out the sun with ash clouds" type of volcanic vent...

Right now, DF does nothing to distinguish mafic from felsic magma, although it would be great if it did.

Actually, it's the other way round, mafic lava is the thin stuff. It's probably the most dorfy lava as well, because it'll flow the hell away from the volcano to giganormous distances and burn shit up. It is also significantly hotter than felsic lava (>1000 celcius as opposed to ~700 celcius), so it'd burn things even better. Also, it's the high viscosity of felsic lava that tends to clog up volcanoes. Part of me wants to simulate that in DF, while the other part applauds the destruction it would cause. c:
