Arrrrrgh! Miasma!
« on: December 15, 2007, 12:34:00 pm »

There's a cloud of miasma engulfing my fishery. How do I get rid of it?

Make a refuse stockpile somewhere to get rid of all the rotten fish. Can be outside, where it doesn't generate miasma, or in an isolated room.

It's engulfing everything! My dwarves won't get rid of it!

EDIT: I let it run it's course and it's going away.

You have an indoor fishery?

When I experienced my only problem with miasma, I stopped using my indoors kitchen and butchery, created new ones outside, made sure that haulers, stockpiles and appropriate workshops were available and the problem cleared itself up. I have people set to haul my food before it rots, I know have a tanner to take care of hides and if anything did go wrong, it's outdoors.

As for the miasma that was indoors, once I stopped using the place, the miasma cleared up near instantly. It never spread to the nearby carpenter's workshop (Which was right next door) and hardly bothered a soul.

I just stick my miasma producing buildings behind doors.

[I didn't invent this]

Here's the best layout ever for an indoor refuse pile:

code:

###+###       #  Wall
#=+ +=#     +  Door
### ###     =  Refuse pile
#=+ +=#
### ###
#=+ +=#
### ###
#=+ +=#
#######

Since each little room has only a single spot for refuse, dwarves don't even try to open a door unless there's no refuse behind it.  Thus, miasma NEVER gets out, nor do dwarves ever get exposed to it.  Cool!

I just build a room with a chimney leading outside...  It thinks it's outdoors, so no miasma is generated.

I personally like the purple color, but if it gets too out of hand you may wish to simple wall-off/build a door at the entrance to the source, until the item that's causing it rots away.

I usually keep a refuse pile just outside of my fortress, as close as posssible to minimize walking distance. But I do like the idea Gnomechomsky mentioned, very much.

On a miasma-related note, exactly which items can generate miasma when they rot? I know I could just assume all kinds of refuse are bad, but I like to keep a stockpile of bones, shells and skulls indoors for my craftsdwarves to use. I don't like to leave such refuse items outdoors as they'll disappear at the end of the season.

Does anyone know which refuse items I can safely keep indoors without generating miasma, and which ones I should dispose of?

Bones, shells and skulls won't produce miasma and can be safely stored inside.

Thanks. Actually though, I was wondering which other refuse items are safe to store inside, too. Sorry for being unclear. I already store bones, shells and skulls inside, but I'm not sure which other refuse in the stockpile list will rot and which won't.

Rotten raw hide is one thing that I get the feeling belongs outdoors, but I'm not sure about things such as "meat", "fish" and "raw fish", for example. I know that meat and fish can rot, but do fish generate miasma only when they're raw, or even after they've been prepared? Should I keep meat and fish refuse outside, or do the refuse stockpiles only accept meat and fish when they've started to rot, or does it have separate list entries somewhere that includes such rotting items?

Thanks in advance to anyone who might be able to clarify these things for me.

Similar to Gnomechomsky's idea I keep my refuse piles behind "airlocks" - of course they will develop miasma, but it won't spread. Refuse haulers have to be able to deal with a little stink.
code:
#######

main corridor

#####+#
#===# #
#===# #
#===# #
#===# #
#===+ #
#######

If the airlock is built too short there might still be some escaping miasma, I usually keep them between 5 or 7 tiles.

I'm pretty sure fish only produce miasma when they're raw, when they've been processed by a Fishery they're packed in salt or some other type of preservative and it's like other normal edibles afterward.
