Bowman--- Shield or dodge for protection
« on: February 18, 2012, 07:47:34 am »

I have a question which is better. I believe that shield is better but my tests only showed a mild difference in protection from Bowman[shields will last for some time after most of the dodgers died. usually]. At least with equivalent material in all equipments[iron shields, iron bow, iron xbow.......] with armor being absent. Have anyone any idea if one protection is actually better and not barely so.

Ps. My tests was probably flawed since I never added armor at all only made sure that the material of any equipment used were the same with dodger getting no equipment

Shield is probably marginally better than dodging, since it's also able to block super dangerous things like dragonfire, which will blow over any level of dodging. However, you should probably invest in both if you want maximum survivability. If you fail to dodge, you also get a chance to block with your shield.

lie down next to dingos and boogeymen and shield, dodge and armor user will skyrocket up to legendary... my vampire wrestler is legendary +15 in all those i just wrestle people wielding a shield and i'm pretty much invinsible, but i did get a few scars along the way.

I concur with the shield assertion. Blocking dragonfire is now joke. That said, you should probably level them equally. You likely won't be hitting dragons right off the bat, and you'll get more bang for your buck on "embarking" with an equal amount of points in each.

Just pick up many shields, and (r)emove them from your backpack.

Alternatively, you can try pissing yourself and crying. If Toady's coded pity into archers, you'll be saved, but even if he hasn't, you'll die with the same grace and distinction as if you had tried to fight valiantly.

I agree with Urist. Steampunk is like Darth Vader winning Holland's Next Top Model. It would be awesome but not something I'd like in this game.
Unfortunately dying involves the amputation of the entire body from the dwarf.

why bother choosing one when you can have both and be a badass :P

i always have high armor shield and dodge skills, keeps me alive REALLY well, usually take swordsmanship observer and swimmer as well as a little bit in wrestling.

300 human/elf/dwarf/goblin/kobold bodies 20 random animal/fish/bird bodies and 3 dragon bodies all in one backpack. fun stuff.

Here's my favorite setup: Put points into dodge and put shield user to novice. Find multiple shields, use them. Currently I'm running around holding 2 shields in my left hand, and a halberd, a crossbow, and a third shield in my right.

Lying down next to bogeymen will get you killed. Lying down next to anything actually will probably get you killed.

The material a shield is made of counts for absolutely nothing at current. All that matters is its quality.

I'm pretty sure you get a chance at blocking or a chance at dodging, not both. Which one you take it based on your combat preference and what kind of attack.

For the last time, more shields does not increase your block chances. It might let you gain shield points faster, but that might just be a rumor to.

And if you're going to train your shield on something, just grapple something weak and hit [.] over and over.

From what I've read it counts as armor for your hand, in which case material matters. But I have no clue if what I read was correct.

Shield material has no effect, except for weight and bashing.  And, in past versions, if you blocked dragonfire with a copper or bronze shield it could melt on you, so iron was preferable.

A funny quirk with dodging is that you can dodge back one square into the projectile's flight path, and so get attacked a second or even thrid time.  I've seen combat reports of guys jumping out of an arrows way, only to get headshot by the same arrow.  And also, there's the risk of falling off cliffs, towers, stairs, etc..
