You Are Captain...
« on: February 18, 2012, 01:39:49 am »

Greetings!

You are [all] the captain of the F.S. Narcissus, a Polarian Speedbreaker class frigate currently stationed near Denver Mining Station, in the Dubhe system, surrounded by metallic asteroids and orange fog in the well-known Sawatch cloud. The four dwarf stars are barely visible through the thick could of smog and gas around the station. The primary metals mined from the asteroids here are niobium and beryllium, both of which are of chief interest to the Aroth Alliance Council of Shipbuilders, who regularly make passes through the system.

There are jump points in the system to Polaris and Alioth. Polaris is the capital of the Polaris Governance, a weak organization that "governs" the systems in this sector of the galaxy. Aloth is the location of the great Jumpgate, the only convenient method of travel between the Polaris Sector and the Sol Sector... unless you plan on making a 400 light-year star-hopping trip.

There is a third jump point on the opposite side of the system to M97, the Owl nebula. Here it is rumored that there is a junker station that acts as a haven for all freelancers, pirates, and explorers alike. There you'll find equipment vendors from all over the galaxy, as well as a healthy pool of able goons.

Our name is Jason Travi. Radio the Denver Mining Station and find out if they require assistance with anything.

Okay, roger that, Captain.

You radio the mining station and ask for something to help with. The station is owned by an independent mining company with little access to large asteroid miners. Hence, the mining operation consists of tugs being sent out to reel asteroids in, while the station blasts them with X-ray lasers. Since the miners don't have much in the way of wages, neither would you if you were to help. However, the station's consultant responded:
"Good day there! We're unfortunately not able to give... never mind. According to the manager, one of our mining convoys is under attack by Styx pirates. If you could mop them up for us we'll pay you say, around 400.000 credits. I'll upload the coordinates now and tag the ships on both sides."

The pirate ships popped up as enlarged wireframes on the ship's augmented reality display. There was a single fighter wing and a Charon class gunship. While the gunship would be vulnerable to the Narcissus' howitzers, the fighters would be a problem.

What is your course of action?

Move to engage, Open fire upon the gunship with the Howitzer. Once its destroyed turn our focus to the fighter, and blast it to pieces.

Problem: Shooting fighters with a howitzer is like trying to directly hit a jeep with a real howitzer at 100m.

Well we could, but we only have eight Lancet torpedoes, which means they'll most likely be quite powerful. We should save them for a stronger foe.

Do we have any fighters of our own?

If not, then I suppose Plan C is the way to go.
Plan C = Blow up the gun ship with the howitzers, and hope to rout the enemy.

@Frost Nope, no fighters yet. The frigate's bay has room for two or three, however.
@Elf You'd need something to detonate the torpedoes on or with. Remember that the pirate ship, once destroyed, is fair game for salvage.

For now, a few (20) goons.
I'll add another stat for now but you haven't got any soldiers or specialists yet.

--------

You order your crewmen to proceed to the waypoint, about 10km away. Meanwhile, you ask the station correspondent if he can scramble some ships for assistance.

"Sorry, no can do! All we got is the fleet of tugs that you're supposed to rescue. I don't think harpoon cannons are gonna help much against those tiny little fighters."

The F.S. Narcissus approaches the Charon gunship from a distance of 1.5km. Its fighter escorts break off from the gunship and head towards the Narcissus to engage it.

The howitzers fire, and the gunship is hit on the 20ap starboard, which is immediately crushed and blasted through by the explosive shells. The Narcissus fires a second time, finishing the tiny 60hp gunship off, leaving it decompressed and floating through space.

You launch the salvage cables and collect three escape pods.

The fighters engage with their machine guns! The Narcissus is hit on the front, taking 5 damage total from the five fighters. The fighters do not route!

Meanwhile, the three asteroid tugs give their salutations and start up their cruise drives, heading back to the station. You should get the payment soon...
