Do windows block water?
« on: November 06, 2007, 08:31:00 pm »

Hello,

I am about to put in a massive seaside glass window on one side of my dining hall, and I was wondering if windows can hold water back.  If not, I can always use glass walls I suppose; I was just wondering.

In the last version they were able to block seasonal floods, but not artifical floods. How that translates to the new version is unknown to me. I would personally try to build a window inside a 1 tile wide channel, and flood it to test if the window stopped the water, before I went to build a large room based upon it.

So is there any difference, gameplay-wise, between a glass window and glass block wall?

You can see through a window.

Dwarves can "admire" glass windows, while walls and floors only increase the general value of a room. Also, I believe that windows are not structural (i.e., you can't build on top of them or support things with them), but they are transparent in adventure mode, while glass walls are apparently too thick.

I refilled a pond adjacent to my fort, and the water doesn't come through the windows into my fort.

Interestingly, I think that windows may also be better for walling in waterfalls than walls.  I made a waterfall to drain my aquaduct when it's not in use, and surrounded the opening that the water is to fall into with one z-level of windows, and not a single tile of water has spilt out of the shaft. I'm guessing the fact that there's no top of the windows for the water to pool on that causes this.
