due to a quirk of building-destroyer mechanics, if the FB in question DID target the iron grate, but got to one tile away, it'd helplessly stare at THAT just as surely as an artifact at 2 tiles away.

Guys, I KNOW artifact furniture take no damage, I'm trying to see whether building destroyers will move (aka deconstruct) artifact wall grates or floodgates but the local building destroyers weren't being very cooperative and just standing a tile from the artifact for some reason.

The FB even stood a tile from the iron grate in front of the artifact grate, which was odd.

any building artifact can't be destroyed. I've had success with doors, statues, floodgates, cabinets, chests... well, don't know any others anymore.

This really meant that they wouldn't be deconstructed either, sorry if it wasn't clear enough. As mentioned by now, them standing one tile away is them trying to destroy it.

from the wiki on that subject:
Quote
Building destroyers can, and will, destroy buildings even if there's one tile of empty space between them and the building. Bug:4585 In fact, they cannot destroy immediately adjacent buildings, and they can become stuck if they start destroying the building while adjacent. This can be a result of a fight, for instance when a Forgotten Beast kills the last defender while standing in such a spot, then it won't move to a better suiting position and will stand idling, unless killed or distracted.

The rest of my post was wondering what, for example, if you wanted to make use of an artifact floodgate for actual use in blocking water, the effect of mechanisms would be. WanderingKid showed that if you use a non artifact mechanism in an artifact construction, the building can be deconstructed. Now I'm wondering if it's different when the mechanism is artifact quality too

Actually, I was planning on using the fact that the open/closed states of floodgates and grates are flipped on the same lever position bridges open and close to block the dodge-me pit route when not in use and to close the main passageway and open the pit route when I want it open.

I was trying to account for building destroyer behavior first though and wanted to make sure that they don't remove the floodgate or whatever. Haven't checked how they behave when the artifact grate or floodgate is in the down position.

However, I am closing off the main route for now to see how well that works. Besides, I've had to make some changes since making it into a snake pit didn't really work and the dodge-me weapon traps worked TOO well, so I changed the mechs on that and put spears on the bottom connected to a lever, so I just also want to see how the modifications work.

I am having trouble loading my DF to Ubuntu.  The two main problems are that I am new to Linux and I do not have internet connection at home where the Ubuntu installation resides.  I never know if the issue is that it can't get online or if what I need is in the Linux sdl, but I can't find it.

Is anyone willing to field some private messages on the subject?  I have the wiki article on installation but it presumes more Linux experience than I have.  Post willingness to help here and I would PM questions as they arise.  Thanks

DF does not require an Internet connection to play, but you may need an Internet connection in order to install the 32-bit libraries that it needs to run.

Don't send questions in private messages.  Just ask them in one of these threads.  That way, everyone can answer, and everyone (present and future) who has the same issues can read the answers.

Forgotten Beasts... How I hate your randomness.

So, I've got a trap laid out, and two tasty tasty doors well positioned to keep the FB's from blocking my bridges that will close the trap up... and none of them will fly in.  I know there's pathing, but they just don't want to come up and eat my furniture.

There's a few fliers just kicking around in that cavern that I'm trying to trap (to kill or use) but they just don't want to path to the furniture.

Recommendations?

EDIT: I'm coming to the conclusion the fliers just won't path via air travel.  Does anyone know for sure that flying FBs will air-path to destroy buildings?

I believe that if there is no path on the ground to a destination, then things in the water and air will only move randomly.  If there is a path to their destination via ground, they seem to path normally even if they're in the air on water.

How come my couples only sometimes actually share bedrooms? I have one bedroom in which only one of the assigned dwarves owns the bedroom, in the other both halves of the couple share the room.

It's really weird, as there doesn't seem to be any reason why the two aren't moving in together.

Could age be an issue? both are over 80 years old, maybe they don't want to share rooms anymore?

maybe they got together only after they arrived in your fort and still have their own bedroom claimed? Or, if you assigned bedrooms yourself instead of letting them choose, you may have assigned it that way yourself and they sleep just wherever they want. Sometimes together, sometimes not

Well... it's true that these only got together after embarkation and the others arrived as a couple. Nevertheless, I never had any bedrooms assigned before making this room other than a dormitory. They couldn't really have claimed any beds there...

I'll check those beds though. But I do think it should be possible for a couple to live in the same apartment even if they' re just married right?

If any member of a married couple claims or is assigned a bedroom, that bedroom is shared with the spouse. This also holds for dining rooms and statue gardens, btw.

I've only ever seen the alternative when dwarfs with own bedrooms married later. Usually, one bedroom gets shared in this case and the other remains solitary property. The non-shared bedroom can be unassigned, so it's free to be claimed by later settlers.
