This thread should probably be stickied at some point.

I just generated a world (34.02, fresh download extracted into own folder):
- Large size
- Max no. of creatures
- Medium no. of sites and civilisations
-History ran for 145 years.

I decided to read about the world's Legends, and most people talk about generating an XML - so I did that. The XML file is currently just shy of 100 MB in size and still growing; is this normal?

Also, what tool do people typically use to read the Legends XML? I was planning on using Notepad++, but it can't open files that big.

What's wrong with using magma? That's almost always the easiest method.
I have issues channeling it properly to do that method. I end up flooding the fortress with magma.
Check out my RtD!

Most people currently don't make large world due to the enormous amount of historical events, sites and figures  that will show up, sometimes crashing the history gen

Is there a simple way to clear my refuse stockpile of the things that are useless? Like I want goblin bodies because they'll become bone eventually, but it seems fingers etc never become useful.

Would dumping everything under "body parts" in stocks only get the useless stuff?

My dorf whose elbow got messed up 5 years ago and still hasn't healed, has now suddenly picked up an infection. How does such a thing happen, and can I do anything about it?

He is a hammerdwarf. He fought a battle above ground, but a long time ago.

Could be a bug...from what I remember of the dev logs, vampires never sleep, they only feign sleep to trick others into thinking they're alive. So it's likely that if one got "tired" due to some oversight (or possibly if a dwarf became a vampire while tired), they'd never loose the tired status, since presumably sleep is the only thing that cures tiredness.

I'd file something on the bug tracker, and upload a savegame.

I got a gigantic hadrosaurid with deadly dust. How does dust work, and how am I supposed to judge how dangerous a FB is?

Any chance they were exposed to a syndrome?  Do they have alcohol?

Make soap for your hospital, and a well for a water source in the hospital as well, is probably the second best way to prevent infection.  The first best is to have a hospital in the first place.
