It appears that the only reliable method is to carry corpses to a non-zombie-creating portion of the map (if your embark has any) or throw them into an inescapable pit. Apparently, even the mighty magma has been tried and has failed to stop zombification. Opinion seems to be about equally divided as to whether this is just a little too hardcore even for Dwarf Fortress, or the best thing that ever happened to the game. (Put me in the first category: zombies need SOME weakness or people are just going to never embark in zombie-zones.)

Wait...Magma cremation doesn't work on preventin reanimation? Guess it's time to dig a shaft to the circus and use the glow pits.

I want to tell you they were bad men, cephalo.  I want to tell you that with a better overseer the Fortress never would've gotten so bad someone would get offed in a pointless fisticuffs.
But the sad truth charlie?
It was inevitable.

Or just try and dump them into a pit with goblin thieves.

Kill them into smaller pieces. I've got to a point where corpses are so damaged, the moment they resurrect they collapse or bleed out.

Or you could just take the time to dig a pit.

If magma has no effect ... is there any hope?

Instead of asking Toady to nerf zombies... How about we ask him to make magma more powerful? Sounds fun to me. Let's make it explode violently on contact with undead.

Even better idea, lets make it explode violently on contact with the air!

the way I dealt with the multitude of hands, fingers, mutilated corpses and other equally retarded zombie parts that kept scaring was to kill them and then immediately carry them off and atom smashing them.

I had zombified horse hairs try to push my dwarves to death, just for the record. Also, a reanimated elf hand kicked my miner's skull in.
