trading:
75 metal
25 copper
0 charcoal (we could make some ourselves from wood)
--
500

our resources:

354+60+20*4 = 494

<haggle> those "young rabbits" are mostly grown; they should be worth more than 1/3 of an adult ; they're healthy, and they are with their mother (extra metal if successful, or drop 2 copper if not)

Spes:

5 scientists spend the week working with the nanoids ; they try to design a set which can work in reverse decomposing themselves and either duplicating an adjacent material, releasing pure energy, or (if they are not that smart) a specific pre-defined material. (repair paste/non rechargeable battery)
Once they are done, they try to design a set to quickly decompose and release all their energy in a quick burst, or specific pattern (an intelligent explosive; useful for shaped charges, heat sources, spot welding w/o a power source, other things)

5 scientists run the nano factory, clear the new construction nanites and start producing a set of electronics creating nanites, and a set of advanced electronics nanites.
They then (use the computer to) try to design a solar panel which the nanites can easly produce, and a set of nanites to produce them (thin film amorphous silicon is probably the way to go):
the main advantage is that they are easy to manufacture (in 1 layer), and use very little material (good when we have not much silicon). The main disadvantage is inefficiency, which can be overcome with multi-layer cells (which our nanites will find easy to do).

Quote
Wiki: More recently, improvements in a-Si construction techniques have made them more attractive for large-area solar cell use as well. Here their lower inherent efficiency is made up, at least partially, by their thinness – higher efficiencies can be reached by stacking several thin-film cells on top of each other, each one tuned to work well at a specific frequency of light. This approach is not applicable to c-Si cells, which are thick as a result of their construction technique and are therefore largely opaque, blocking light from reaching other layers in a stack.
The main advantage of a-Si in large scale production is not efficiency, but cost. a-Si cells use approximately 1% of the silicon needed for typical c-Si cells, and the cost of the silicon is by far the largest factor in cell cost. However, the higher costs of manufacture due to the multi-layer construction have, to date, made a-Si unattractive except in roles where their thinness or flexibility are an advantage.

James should empty empty half the energy out of each of the torches to recharge his cart (up to 16 energy). He offers the remaining energy in one of the torches to whoever he thinks needs it the most (the merchants if they have had any issues, but probably the miners; they have electrical vehicles).

He promises to be back in about 6 weeks with those parts, and heads home with the merchants. On the way home he talks about the town, and how the merchants thinks that it is faring with all that polution.

--
spes:the 5 scientists scientists attempting to break into the door decide to use some "mysterious powder" to dissolve or weaken a critical component of the locking mechanism(after all we have 2 already disassembled so we know just where we need to weakin, and we can duplicate more parts need to fix it) to bunker. It seems that the cart isn't portable neough to get around.

They apply a narrow band across the hinge and attempt to provide some power (just low voltage; from the simulations we have done we should know how to do so. If needed, we take parts from one of the idle cells of the nanofab. (we've 8 creator, 8 constructor cells, of which 2 and 5 have stuff in them).

5 engineers, 5 scientists, 10 soldiers (9 rifles, 6 swords) go and see what can be scavenged from the plane (including its frame)
10 soldiers with axes spend the week doing as many water runs as possible.

2 soldiers are left guarding home. They turn the upgraded fence on.

The new, upgraded fence is turned on for the week.

24 farmers, the civilians, the children and the blacksmiths run the farms and the orchards.

7 engineers, 10 builders build a second windmill, and connect it to project P also (D100 x2  energy instead of 1D 100)

Everyone else spends the week searching the lab, tracing energy conduits from the fusion reactor searching for the teleportation or gravity control research labs which someone things are mentioned in one of the notes discovered on the computer.

I think we shouldn't go this labor intensive way. We'll have to burn some charcoal and smelt ore... I am sure we can find better work for our population. And wood is a useful resource, burning it isn't that good

I propose
10 metal bars
10 copper bars
20 Metal ore
20 charcoal

for the same 500 food + haggle for more metal bars

Also, why do we ignore hunting? It's a nice food source/ Hunting with that crossbows may give us some food + useful resources. I suggest using at least two soldiers for this task on a permanent basis. In fact it would be nice to make more crossbows\bows and have a large hunting party, that will raise it's experience for a real combat.

Let's take two soldiers from water runs and send them hunting with crossbows and rifles... But rifles should be used  only for self-defense in dangerous situations, for regular hunting they should use crossbows. Of cause they should work in pair and cover each other

Another thing to consider - We need some personal armor for our soldiers, ideally some kind of chainmail,  but simpler things are good, too

1. You don't need charcoal for smelt. You got an electric arc furnace.
2. As for the hunting, the time you lost 5 armed guards, without a trace, and the Leukrokottas might have something to do with that.

also, we can probably make carbon nanofiber based armor in our nanofactory.

We can smelt 10 metal per week with 5 people and 100 energy so the "labor intensive" option of purchasing 100 resources instead of 40 doesn't cost us that much.

At a trade ratio of 3:1 i'd almost want to purchase ore, and sell it as metal, just for the profit margin.

Finally, we havn't ever gotten around to making any bolts for those x-bows, as we can now create amunition for our guns, and can create high powered rifles if we set our mind to it.

finally, we need a huge amount of metal to get the fusion reactor going.

We have an energy income of 55/week directly, and 200/3 weeks from each sugar-beet patch, via ethanol. (we should try to construct that ethanol powered generator we designed earlier; i would guess that it would increase the power generated from ethanol to 400, either that, or make the ethanol from 1 harvest last longer.)

but yeah, armor would be good ...

I have a day of bad suggestions....

Anyway,  armour. What options do we have?

1st - leather from that processed corpse. Do we have anyone who can make a leather armour? I think it's worth a try

2nd - simple metal armours. I think WW2 style helmets are easy to make and will increase survivability of our soldiers.I think blacksmith should produce some this turn.

3rd - wooden shields. Don't mix  good with rifles, but in this world melee combat isn't that rare.... not sure

4th - Advanched metal armours like Chainmail. Hard to make but should be a good solution. Especially if we use titanium\iron alloy

5th - All advanched armours that nanites can make. But I think low tech solution is better ATM

armor:

6: high tech constructed low-tech armor (advanced ceramic / carbon fiber plate / ... / or even advanced alloy; with some titanium we should be able to whip up a good alloy which is lightweight and able to stop bullets). -- remember that our nano-fab can create almost anything we can describe, so a base metal chain is nice, but not the best we can do by far.

yes, powered/ advanced armor would be nice, but we don't have the energy supply base for that, yet.

i would imagine that all our resources should go towards getting that fusion plant running, because once we have the energy to run the nanofactory, we can outfit everyone with high-tech gear in a few weeks.

The best armor option i think is available atm is to create a kevlar/ceramic/leather composite style armor using the nanofab, with the biological resources as an input.

We know of 3 things we need to protect against: a) wild animals; b) super-powered wild animals; c) raiding parties (described as 3 cars potentially with tank and aircraft support ; so 30 people with rifles + heavy weapons support)

a) massed rifle fire + swords has shown have protected us with no worries, other than running out of ammo.
b) again massed rifle fire against the leukrottas, but if they catch us un-awares we will be in trouble, last time they managed to damage the fence badly, and only a lucky roll or 2 prevented "issues" - also vehicle level armor plate isn't a protection, so mobility is the key to avoid being squished here.
c) yeah this is the issue, so anti-ballistic armor is where we should focus. (there hasn't been any sign of high tech guns, but i suspect they are out there. Also, we'll need some anti-tank weapons; we have 2, but no AA; thats where the coil guns which have been designed are needed to be produced;
with this next batch of resources some will be armor, some guns, some materials for a second buggy, and the rest for 1/2 the repairs on the fusion reactor.

As we are short on raw resources, and if we want to shape armor or other specialised components we need to melt them anyway, thats why we should purchase as much ore as possible from the traders, so that in the 1-2 months until we trade there again, we can continue to produce stuff as far as energy allows.

Fourth week of June

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

The trading goes well, and you manage to get your entire purchase. No extra freebies though. The voyage home is swift, and the metal is delivered swiftly. The merchants announce that they'll probably depart on another traderun towards another of the trading marketplace soon. They plan to depart in two weeks, and it would take them a month forth and back.

The repair/ one time use batteries nanites batteries are designed quickly. They have limited replication capabilities, and can therefore make a limited amount of other, simple substances. They can be equiped for a variety of triggers, including water, air or certain electric or magnetical signals. The explosive paste has some problems though. For now even a small electrical current tends to trigger a fatal explosive cascade. More work on them is required.

Work on the solar production nanites is problematic. The simulations indicate that they have problems staying to the grid and they just tend to build in random directions.
The plan to weaken a critical part of the doors seems to fail. Apparently both the lock and the hinges are heat resistant, as well as quite sturdy.(Stop rolling bad on these rolls)

Work on getting the plan goes fast. In fact, they have just dug up the frame and took everything with them. During the dig they make an astonishing find in the planes cargo bay. The plane, as small personnell(+- 10 people) plane, was apparently carrying some kind of cargo. You're not sure what it is, but it seems like some kind of drill.

The water run is a bit less succesfull. During the first run, the soldiers are attacked by some kind of large crocodile. They are able to attack it first, and manage to kill one of them. Unfortunately, the second crocodile managed to flank them, and managed to kill two and wound 3 others. Your soldiers managed to get out of combat at the moment, as the crocodile began to eat it's deceased mate.

The new windmill is easily completed. (Btw: it produces (d100) *2 energy, the wind doesn't blow different for each windmill)

Exploring the lab gives no usefull results.

It's really windy

I think we need safer water source... and that drill may really help us to make some deep wells.

Also we can get some really nice alloys from this plane, exactly what we need for personal low tech armors

i'm just waiting on clarification on what type of "drill" we have :)

yeah, it's been on the non-existing to-do list for a little while, but we only produced our first motors 6 weeks ago, are yet to make any heavy machinery, and our tech level and resource constraints are wierd enough that matter-energy conversion via nanites may actually be easier than than drilling a hole a few hundred M into the ground and lining the hole in a waterproof material ...

besides, a mysterious powder variant that continues to replicate a pipe down, consuming anything below it, but disintegrates at water immersion would be way better than any industrial drill for creating a hole.

Definition: "Repair paste": variant of mysterious powder "battery" nanoids which replicate adjacent non-oxidized metal on decomposition. Limitations: simple metalic alloy only(so can do stainless steel but no exotic materials, ceramics, cloth, plastics, etc ...), and magnetic trigger; To use: clean damaged area then fill/cover damaged area with paste, rapidly wave strong magnet over (a small neodynium magnet should be on hand for this); watch as paste repairs target. (note, the trigger is a rapidly changing magnetic field, not a strong one, so keeping the powder in a metal box would shield it from activation)

4 scientists modify the 2 offline mysterious powder creating nanites to create "Repair paste" and are turned on. (This is going to be our top value trade good, if this works). After that they create some nanties focused on forming Carbon fiber Armour plates (as designed earlier).

5 scientists setup the electronics production nanites, and feed them some silicon ore. They also check to ensure that the advanced production nanites can upgrade electronics to advanced electronics.

5 scientists again work on the pattern explosive nanites, this time aiming to ensure that the nanites are triggered via a magnetic signal passed between them (therefore 1 nanite can trigger a pre-defined pattern on the external (non-electrical) trigger)

5 scientists try to organize better control of the nanites so they can assemble solar panels. They also work on the problem from the other direction, and recognize that amorphous solar panels don't need a regular grid to work; just organized layers.

(naturally the computer will be being used overtime here, with several groups doing stuff)

the 5 blacksmiths fire up the forge; 5 engineers, 5 builders work with them to make motors (they pull in other people as needed, we want to maximize motor production for the next 2 weeks)
5 soldiers take 5 guns and 5 swords and make bayonet rifles, so that they won't get caught at mealy range again (I imagine that this will produce some metal scrap, as swords are larger than sensible bayonets; sort of cut swords in half, make new mount compatible with gun barrel, and able to be held when detached)

5 engineers do a chemical analysis of the, Titanium ore, Silicium ore, and iron ore, to check for secondary elements (other than Ti, Si and Fe)

* andy_t_roo assumes that the drill has correct blow-out presenters, its advanced drill head is fine drilling on air circulation, and that the power supply is compatible with the bases. (ebbor: if i didn't list these assumptions, would you even roll to check them, and are you going to roll now that i have listed them? ....)

7 engineers setup the drill on a flat area to the side of the lab, near-enough to the farm and water tank and lab to connect it if we hit water/gas/oil. (2 engineers stand at 1 side checking procedures, and ensuring "Safety First; Zero Harm; etc ...") (i don't mind a productivity drop if we are being careful) )

16 farmers run the fields; 8 farmers, 7 civies, 8 drivers run the orchards

0 scientists work on the bunker, they all seem to be focusing on the nano-factory. By comparing notes do they discover anything new about the nanites, the nanoids, or the factory?

Varinius shows Sophia our recent discovery of the drill rig as it is being set up. He's excited as this is the first real bit of machinery he has had to play with since the "Glitch". (yeah, there's much better things to be doing with 2 heros, but can you imagine our hero *Not* wanting to play with the first real bit of engineering we've done?

Tobias spends the week working on the computer with the guys doing the nanotech. He also checks up on how his radio program is running.

hmm, 35 soldiers and 7 builders remaining (3 injured) ...
5 soldiers man the guard towers
15 soldiers, armed with (5/15) swords and guns go on a hunting trip along the river (swords for for mealy defence as default). They aim to bring back any crocodiles they see, along with anything else they think is worth catching (game may be shot). The soldier that gets the crok that attack his friends gets a field promotion to squad commander. (we do need some type of military commander here, and this is as good excuse as any.)

After checking that nothing else needs help with (i'm not sure how many people the motors will take to make) the 7 soldiers,5 builders, an anyone else idle (no children) take axes and swords and go along also. If they can't find game, they harvest some trees instead.

Quick question about the combat - how did that actually work out; 10 people with 6 attack 4 defense vs 2 creatures of 2 attack 4 defense, and we loose 2 ...

(and thats assuming that they were not gathering water in sight of the plane, which was at the edge of the water with 10 guys with rifles ...)

on opposing die rolls we should take 1 damage and deliver 40 each round (on average) against creatures with 10 life (unless i don't understand the combat system)

I don't understand why do we need motors? For what tasks? I doubt that heavy machinery is that needed, besides we don't have much fuel\power for that. Low tech solutions are better for such a small setllement

Also, I dislike that hunting trip, while I proposed it before, now we have to few soldiers to risk them for some resources. Because soldeirs aren't renewable resource and their defense is too low for any real combat (Yes, I am advocating body armors yet again)
