The key here is "don't even think about going to fight bandits when just starting, even with a demigod class".

More generally, try to get Iron or steel stuff before even going to fight anything serious, unless you wish to be struck down without being able to do anything.

So much for the "peasant" start, you even have problem with animals anyway.

iron or steel do not make a difference to arrows and bolts.  eventually you will run across elite archer types.  then you will be lucky if you are two-shotted.

I was trying a fun build, namely a dual-wield shield Biter with fire blast and some good sneaking, but alas, .02 came out, so I will have to retry it!  Before the update,  I sneak away from ambushes and/or RUN THE HELL AWAY!!  (I learned this after about 3 dozen or so deaths).  As for bandit leaders, don't touch them, at all.  The only time I take them on is after I kill all his minions (hit and run tactics are absolutely necessary) and then get a few recruit fodders to distract him/her until I get the first hit on their legs (always, always aim for the leg on leaders), you can have your way with the leader after you get him prone/stunned/bleeding.

I haven't had much trouble with my demigod. I trained my dodge* and wrestling up by strangling kobolds in a dungeon. Then I reached the nasty section of the dungeon with a large room with 4 archers in it And their, Leet Crossbowman Leader. Between shield and dodge I killed them off one by one. The trick was that I ran into them AFTER the kobold slaughterfest. When that started I had trouble with a single spear-kobold.

*(checked the logs) make that shield. Dodge helped, but the arrows were mostly Blocked.

Toady typically doesn't do things by half measures.  As evidenced by turning "make hauling work better" into "implement mine carts with physics".
There are many issues with this statement.

Adamantine dosen't make a difference with archers. In this update Silver Arrow>Masterwork Candy Helmet.

Weird. I'm running .02 right now and the bandit leaders are the least of my problems. I run up to them, give them a quick shanking, and they go all soft and gooey, as humans are wont to do.

I agree with Urist. Steampunk is like Darth Vader winning Holland's Next Top Model. It would be awesome but not something I'd like in this game.
Unfortunately dying involves the amputation of the entire body from the dwarf.

I don't think anything about combat or materials was changed for this release. I'd love for somebody to prove me wrong, but I think bandits are no stronger now than they were before. Archers and crossbowpersons were huge threats before as they are now.

Yeah. grinding and cheap tactics have been all thats keeping my characters alive, for such short short periods. It ends up so you cant really play anyone but a stealthy or fast character.

Tried going for a Axedwarf beserker type a few times for my first build. Pumped full of arrows before making it to the first person. Problem is your companions dont have the history bandits do, so they die in 10 turns leaving you to face them all.

I found my character sitting in the middle of a pond shooting bolts and arrows at bandits who couldnt swim. And if they fell in, you'd get master level bandits who would drown from falling in ponds... with RAMPS!

Probably a progressive system where the size and power of the bandits is based on your 'carrying wealth' and fame, but that cant really happen till the economy kicks in which will be years.

That's where it gets annoying when you cannot clear the dungeon using all the armor and soldiers from the keep above it.

There is a finely-engraved image of Ascimator on the wall. Ascimator is slapping himself in the face. The artwork relates to the loss of the only anvil in Perplextombs in the late winter of 6.
