He probably fell in the magma and choked on smoke coming from his own body. Even without a corpse, they will still get the the decay of a friend thought.

You just gotta find out what made him fall in there.

If he fell in the magma, it would show in the gamelog. (Had that happen with 2 people falling in through their magma glass furnaces after being magmacrabbed.)

Sadly, that's how I found my legendary miner.  Digging sideways into volcanoes is no longer as 'safe' as it used to be - use expendable peasants with cheap picks and build them a nice memorial for their sacrifice to the fortress.

I usually carve a fortification into the wall instead. Same effect but you don't waste the pick. :P

I checked the gamelog, nothing about anyone burning horrifically. Just the "missing for a week" notification.

Zoom in to each pick and see where they are.  If one's sitting at the bottom of a lava pool, it's a dead giveaway.
So far as I know it's not possible to zoom in on the pick from the stocks screen. If it is I'd love to know how.

Time has passed. The dwarves of Ralsakzul continue on with their daily lives. The stairwell to the depths has become a highway as the forges burn bright. Yet even so, I'm sure whatever lurking danger killed Inod is still out there...

This is an aesop. The lurking danger is within dwarves, all of them, embedded in their minds and their souls. The fearsome beast? Fucking Stupidity.

You have to press tab on the stocks screen, so it will display individual items instead of categories. Then you can zoom in on them.

This. Press v to zoom in after you're in tab-mode.

Congrats, Psieye. This is the first time I've seen a derailed thread get put back on the rails.

This... This is impossible. I zoomed in on the pick. One of my newly recruited miners has it, I shit you not. That has to mean that, wherever Inod fell, it was within my dwarves' reach the whole time.

I checked the stockpiles again to see if his corpse was listed among the many. It was not. The only logical conclusion I can draw is that he somehow caught alight, died, and was evaporated without any of my other dwarves seeing him, this despite the fact that my miners work in pairs.

This is awesome story material.
I wonder if demons could somehow infiltrate and abduct dwarves for thier own ends.

It can't be a cave-in, as someone already said, he would have choked on dust not smoke. Smoke doesn't just come from magma, it comes from burning clothing or other matter. Is it possible something jumped him, he fell down the stairs and into magma? There are usually no reports of people burning.

The other possibility is a fire snake or a fire imp got him, but even a dodge should have made a combat report (right?)

Urist McPervert likes tentacle demons for their impure intentions!

[Field journal of Urist McArcheologist]
"The miners in the magma district came to me today after making a most puzzling discovery. There, in the midst of the cavern, was a curious subterene structure, that was clearly not of dwarven origin, and comprised of an unknown, indestructable, and extememly dense substan,e. Within the struture, they had discovered a masterfully fashioned shortsword made of the very legendary substance they had been seeking in that part of the magma district. Being an archeologist, was far more interested in the structure itself, being clearly of xenotic origins, and much less concerned about the material composition or geology of the cavern, or the craven looks of avaricial desire the miners showed toward the structure's curious contents.

On the walls of one section, there was a very well orchestrated motif in bas-relief, of a mutiple limbed creature performing ribauld and wild acts of hedonistic debaucheries and indecent liberties with depictions of humans, elves, and even dwarves. along the borders of this craven image were additional engraved images of those races engaging in a stunningly wide assortment of profane and perverted acts with one another, the explicitness of which is difficult to properly describe here in my journal. My basic understanding of the mural, is that the many armed creature was at some point driven deep into this fortress, and sealed up using the masterwork blade in some sort of denial ritual.

Surely this is mere superstition on the part of the ignorant ancients who created this structure, and with the consent of the baron, we have commenced the task of retrieving the blade for the glory of our settlement......"

[The rest of the journal is blank.]

From what I understand you get a bleed out message or they've died in the heat.

His funeral slab confirms the death was by bleeding out. Draw your own conclusions from that, but I will maintain that he was tortured with strange dreams as he drew closer to the core of the world, and perhaps ventured too deep.

I have had several dwarfs noting they admired a nice trap....   on my now abandoned fort.  yet I never built a trap, once.   unless they count levers as traps?
