Dragged to hell
« on: February 17, 2012, 09:48:04 am »

In my new fort of Ralsakzul, or Silvertrumpets, one of my starting two miners has just vanished without a trace. Last I saw him he was helping dig out a reservoir for the magma workshop floor. I was in fact watching him mine in that very reservoir, when he decided to leave and went up a few flights of stairs. A couple seconds later, I received a message that the miner, Inod, had been missing for a week.

Naturally my first assumption was that a vampire had just taken its first victim. Since the fort is small (15 people, including starting 7) I was able to check over each migrant individually. Yet none of them REALLY seem likely to be a vampire. A few of them are former members of a few civilizations, but not a single one of them has ever murdered another dwarf. One of the migrants had actually recently been made into a militia captain, and upon checking him over I noted that he had quite a few animal kills, as well as one goblin, under his belt. I disbanded his squad immediately anyway.

Frustrated and out of leads, I decide to check up on the thoughts of the missing dwarf itself, which is actually still possible if you look them up by their relations. I discovered he was married, though he didn't have any children in the fort. But there was something much more interesting, a few clues contained in his recent thoughts. "He talked with a Friend lately." "He has been caught in the rain recently." His hauling labors were disabled, and I have no reason to assume he had been above ground in a few seasons.

But there are two thoughts of his that truly strike me as odd: "He admired a splendid Trap lately. He slept uneasily to due noise recently. He choked on smoke underground recently".

I have not created a single trap in my entire fortress. And I have not fully explored the caves yet...

Dark things live in the deep.

I think it's the way towns develop now. In the beginning, people move into a town. Then they start producing tables, which results in more and more tables. Soon tables represent a significant portion of the population, they start lobbying for new laws and regulations, putting people to greater and greater disadvantage...

Dwarves' thoughts don't change after they die, afaik, so he isn't getting rained on in hell.

The key here is 'He choked on smoke underground recently'. That means a cavein. What probably happened is that he mined a tile wrong, or another miner did, and he got sammiched under a chunk of rock. Option 2: He did go outside for whatever reason, when going out, he saw a trap. Outside, he got rained on, and got tired. When coming back in, he was so tired he fell asleep on the traps. So, if you don't find dwarf bits on the bottom of your reservoir, or in your trap hallways, then those might have been the cause.

You can for-sure tell if a vamp is a vamp if you try to name a profession name and it doesn't change. With only 14 dwarves it shouldn't be hard to do. If none of them are vamps and those two above reasons aren't it, well, yeah. really damn creepy.

If it were a cave-in, not only would I receive a notification of that but his thought would rather be "He choked on dust underground lately", unless the wording has changed this version.

I honestly have no idea what happened to this guy. While I want to say the most likely thing is that he fell into the magma (which would explain the smoke he was choking on as his burning flesh), there's no real reason why that should have happened, as again there was no cave-in. If dwarves put up a fight against vampires, it's entirely possible that he dodged down there... Though I think it's clear that that did not happen.

I'm just going to chalk this one up to Cthulhu.

His friends and family are all mourning over the decay of their recently deceased loved one. He couldn't have fallen into the magma, else there would be no corpse to rot out there. There is no miasma in my fort anywhere. This is quite unnerving.

He probably fell in the magma and choked on smoke coming from his own body. Even without a corpse, they will still get the the decay of a friend thought.

You just gotta find out what made him fall in there.

Yes, unfortunately his ghost has appeared in the stairwell where he most probably died... though I still do not know how. I had dug a very deep stairwell and at the very, very bottom there was magma. He probably fell down the stairs (Does that happen?) and into the lava, where he perished. I wish I knew the material of his pick, then I could easily find where he died.

I still don't understand why he admired a nonexistent trap, though... do levers count towards that line of thinking?

Any levers? Pressure plates? Also, my bets are also on cave ins.

I got this same message on my most recent fort.

Checked the unit list, found Dishmab Shamebcatten's mutilated corpse (Undead).

As much as I contributed to it, way to tear the possibility for an interesting story completely apart :P.

I'm fairly certain he fell into the magma somehow. But it's still perplexing... Weapons screen shows two copper picks, the only two in my fortress. Wouldn't the pick have melted in the magma?

Earlier in the fort when I was designating a stairway, a glitch occurred and now in the corner of my map, at the bottom of the world, is the corner of two eerie glowing pits. Perhaps these events are related in some way.

On the whole I do think that some bug(s) played a role in his death. This is, after all, a brand new release

Zoom in to each pick and see where they are.  If one's sitting at the bottom of a lava pool, it's a dead giveaway.

Ignoring the possibility of a cave in, this would make for a really, really good story... And a good mod.

Sadly, that's how I found my legendary miner.  Digging sideways into volcanoes is no longer as 'safe' as it used to be - use expendable peasants with cheap picks and build them a nice memorial for their sacrifice to the fortress.

In a fat-fingered moment while setting up another military squad I accidentally created a captain of the guard rather than a militia captain.  His squad of near-legendary hammerdwarves equipped with high quality silver hammers then took it upon themselves to dispense justice to all the mandate breakers in the fortress.  It was quite messy.
