Do you have a fovorite biome?
« on: February 17, 2012, 09:38:28 am »

Personally, I like flat grasslands with a river in them. It makes it so much easier to get a nice, clean-looking fort than the hillsides, even if it does mean less dwarfy engineering to avoid terrain obstacles.

I also prefer the upper side of the temperate biomes, because I want my map to freeze over during the winter but thaw before summer.

Forested where 2 rivers meet. Or a volcano, anywhere.

I personnally like flat biomes (low hills and no mountains, as much as possible). I also really like starting in heavily forested areas, because the wood makes it easier to start some industries.

Before this version, I'd just go with Untamed wilds, because there wasn't that much fun involved with evil biomes (undead interrupting the tasks of my workers, sometimes a few ogres bothering my soldiers...) but that will change, now that evil biomes are really evil.

Glacier, no doubt.

I love cold biomes, and I love ice.

It's the perfect biome.

... unless you want supplies.

I like ones where there is some missing, crucial supply. Since farming is so OP in this game, that makes water the only crucial supply that can be limited. So cold and hot (where water evaporates) are my favorites. Also beaches (salt water and all).

But I keep losing having fun (too noob) so I'm playing in temperate climates until I am more knowledgeable.

I don't like rivers that much anymore, but still, the water's a plus. That being said, I prefer flat plains, usually with an intersection of terrifying and savage biomes.

I prefer biomes that have a river.
I dont know why, but it also makes a good place to build a bridge and make a choke-point that you can stuff whit cage-traps.

Flat, hot, heavily forested, with a brook (preferably going through the middle embark tile so I can have a safe water source inside the overground cap of my fortress [but not exactly in the middle because that's where I strike the earth] but that's impossible when it's 2x2 embark or bust on this computer), and not savage or evil. A volcano is a gigantic bonus but I'm ok with digging down for my magma.

Lielac likes adamantine, magnetite, marble, the color olive green, battle axes, cats for their aloofness, dragons for their terrible majesty, women for their beauty, and the Oxford comma for its disambiguating properties. When possible, she prefers to consume pear cider and nectarines. She absolutely detests kobolds.

As a victim of a serious case of perfectionism and restartitis, i am very specific with my biomes. My dream embark will contain both temperate conifer/broadleaf forest (preferably joyous wilds) for grizzlies, unicorns and whip vines; mountains, preferably with many sheer impassable cliffs or mountaintops which i can deramp to make terraces or to section my map and channel wildlife for easy captures; a place to fish mussels; a volcano; and last but not least an evil biome with dangerous foes, for instance: desert/badlands/rocky wastelands for nightwings and giant scorpions or tropical marsh for harpies and beak wolves.

Evil temperate conifer forest can also be good due to phantom spider silk, and tropical shrubland/tropical moist broadleaf forest have an amazingly diverse wildlife, and plenty of fun pets as long as you patch no exotic.

For anyone who actually cares, TRY to get an embark which contains both temperate and tropical biomes. Its nigh impossible!

Now that DFVD is here.... My standards will be even higher.

Heavily forested and cold or freezing. I like trees and hate dealing with vermin. I really just hate vermin and I'd take a treeless tundra over a heavily forested jungle any day.

Sheer cliffs and hills are cool, but flat land is ok too.

I used to have a preference for a brook or freshwater lake on the site, but not so much now that there are caverns with water now.
