I think I figured out the Giant Sponges weakness! I embarked in an area with a Giant Sponge, and after about a year a few Giant Masked Lovebirds must have flown directly above it and provoked it. The Lovebirds proceeded to fly directly above it and bite into its body and shook it around voraciously. The Sponge is now Unconscious, Exhuasted and Pale. It just doesn't want to die though. The birds are completely unharmed and are showing no signs of giving up.

How do you exhaust a sponge?

You press the water out of it's body, of course!

But really giant sponges should be more like aquatic trees than actual creatures.

There was a giant sponge and two giant sparrows on the map when I embarked.  They have been spamming my combat report with their battle for the last four years.  The sponge is fine.

yeah, it seems giant sponges are invulnerable to every single direct attack, cave-ins not included. Hell even dragonfire does nothing.

Any creature with no natural attacks, or no limbs left that they have attacks assigned to, will "push" opponents.  This can result in dwarves dodging/falling into water, or even being damaged by the push itself because Giant Sponges are huge.

Just pictured Urist McHammerdwarf charging into a giant sponge and having it bend back and then *sproing* is springs back into place propelling the feckless dwarf into a nearby deep pool where he proceeds to drown.

So has anybody figured out the best way to catch and weaponize giant sponges yet?
because the river on my current fort is full of them.

So does drowning in pools still happen with the new version ?

Also, weaponize them... hardly. Unless you have water-breathing invaders.

Unweaponizable? IMPOSSIBRU! WE MUST WEAPONIZE!

On a serious note: does !!magma!! work?
(if not, im just going to set [HEATDAMPOINT] (or whategver it is) to 0.)

Without modding, of course.

Oh god, this thread made me laugh for 5 minutes non-stop. I had to stifle it into a short girlish squeak to avoid waking up everyone on the block!

That being said, I'll be careful with these sponges with the memories of CARP still lingering in the back of my mind. The untameable, elusive, yet ultimately impossible to defend against adversary of old, now reincarnated into something that doesn't even have the capacity to move yet can slaughter dwarves by the dozen with it's mere presence...

I managed to kill one, shame it was on an evil biome and turned into a 'Giant Sponge corpse'.

A swarm of undead birds, undead river creatures, undead merchants who fell off the waterfall, undead butchered remnants, undead dwarfs and undead cave animals.
