300 sitting targets for my military
« on: February 17, 2012, 02:31:39 am »

I generated a world and started next to a volcano. Immediately to its east is a cave full of kobolds, who are all inactive. They all (that i have checked) have only two items of clothing in their inventory. They are listed as friendly, and do nothing but sit around all day. Under the (u)nit screen, it shows 300 kobolds. They only react to being mauled by a military, and even then only the individual who was attacked will fight back.

To me this seems like the perfect way to create high level military dwarves without any real risk of death.

Also, are kobold caves supposed to be hostile?

I know they used to be hostile at least, haven't actually seen one in a very long time.

Good idea, use good armour, training weapons, and designate entire rectangle of them to be killed.

Do they reproduce?

If so, mod your dwarves to eat sentients, and farm the cutebolds.  Military training on them would work awesome, since you have a neverending source of practice dummies.

If they don't reproduce, yeah, it's still a great idea to train your military on them, but be efficient with the leftovers.  Imagine the bone bolts you could craft...

Kobold have CAN_LEARN but not CAN_SPEAK or INTELLIGENT, so you MIGHT be allowed to eat them from the start, I'm not sure... CAN_LEARN probably removes it...

I think it's the way towns develop now. In the beginning, people move into a town. Then they start producing tables, which results in more and more tables. Soon tables represent a significant portion of the population, they start lobbying for new laws and regulations, putting people to greater and greater disadvantage...
Link for full quote. 'tis mighty funny.

You can't butcher them in adventure mode, thus qualifying them for sentience.

Can they reproduce?

They have UTTERANCES. That works the same as CAN_SPEAK.

Speaking of butchering, is there a way to butcher animals that die outside of being army-murdered or chosen for butchering? Seems like a waste to keep seeing my dwarves put these dying animals in the refuse pile.
