Undead massacre . Help?
« on: February 16, 2012, 08:53:46 pm »

Just fired up the new DF.

Starts off pretty similar to the old. Couple of new features. Cool.

One year in. Human caravan shows up. Then EVERYTHING I EVER KILLED WAKES UP AND STARTS SLAUGHTERING MY DWARVES.

While awesome, this is inconvenient in the extreme. Is there a way to resolve this little problem?

1. Acquired magma?

>Yes, stop here.

2. Acquired insane mechanisms?

Yes, stop here.

3. Got any stupid Dwarf tricks, unfortunate accidents or hidden, very fun surprises?

Yes, stop here.

4. Got weapons?

No? Tell your Dwarves to attack anyways.
All the Dwarves.

Trap the necromancer and then build a pit with windows to an adjancent pit. Build a door to the adjacent pit and designate it as a corpse dump with a stone door connected to a mechanism leading out of it. When gobbos/elves/titans/something invades, UNLEASH THE UNDEAD!Close door after a few undead come out and they kill the threat. Get you hammerdwarves and macedwarves to kill the undead.Dump all the bodies into the pit for fun and profit.

This is Dwarf Fortress. Where torture, enslavement, and murder are not only tolerable hobbies, but considered dwarfdatory.

Axelords.

Hammers. Even a adequate hammerdwarf with an iron hammer can fold zombies in a single hit. And it doesn't leave multiple parts to be reanimated.

I eventually just parked my militia on top of my corpse pile until it was under control then discovered that i had not just a rogue necromancer amongst my own people, but one amongst the damned human merchants as well. Killed them both. Situation under control. Now i have a necromancers book...

But thanks for all the suggestions. Many of them were helpful. The other were sufficiently dwarfly.

Embark at the border of an evil and non-evil zone. Create your fort in the non-evil zone.  Undead from the evil biome will attack you, but cannot reanimate if they perish on non-evil ground.

Now a new problem seems to have occurred. The necromancer returned as a ghost, in the middle of a goblin murderin sparring battle. The zombie goblins (which wouldnt stay dead obviously) then proceeded to kill all of my highest ranked military dorfs. So now i have a locked room with a ghost necromancer and a a bunch of zombie soldier dorfs.

This is again hilarious. But problematic.

A ghost of a necromancer is screwing you up? Hell, I want this story in the 'post your anecdote' thread for possible illustration!

Can't raise the dead cos I ain't got a necromancer.
Can't get a necromancer cos I ain't got a book.
The traders got a book but it ain't the right one.
So I'm looking for a girl with a book and a job.
And a fort ... with cable ...

Don't you know where you are?

Ahem. Sorry about that.

And that's exactly the reason why Axelords.

Apparently. I guess i just got that set of conditions that allowed for optimum fun. Working out a way to put his lichy spirit into the ground for good.

I think he just tagged a ride with the other migrants. I honestly think that was part of the idea of this new version. Toady has stuck in a whole bunch of vampires, werewolves and other nasties in as random migrants. :P should be fun.  Shall experiment further.

Yup. Easier to kill large zombies when they're in smaller pieces.
