World Gen So Slow! - W/ Video :P
« on: February 16, 2012, 06:47:27 pm »

This isn't a question, just want to have this resource for my own use later on, meaning, this whole thread to be used at my own discretion. MWUAHAHAHAH...

Anyways, note in the video, it gets to year 150 in about 4 minutes, then it takes 67 minutes to get to 260. Lolwat?
Discuss away at what you think might be causing such a slow world gen.

I'd like to hear your ideas. Because I am trying to gen a full 1000 year history on the largest world to test what happens when I fuck with certain things in the files. :P
P.S: I am playing unmodded, unchanged DF in the video.

There's a bug in world gen I think. I had that same experience...then generating a medium world of medium history, it got to 250 years in less than 2 mins.

If you're having freakishly long world gen times, then it's probably best to regen.

I'm getting this too. Gets to 100 and then slows down like heck.

Probably optimization issues with the new World Gen stuff.

It's the new towns - with a large population, and the ability to trade from one town to another, if your human/dwarf populations get large, your civs expand out to new sites, they consume voracious amounts of RAM and cycle time.

Check the ages - if it's the Age of Myth, and civ races are relatively contained, the worldgen flies by.  If it ever drops to Age of Heroes or Golden Age, your CPU will squeel for mercy.  The latter two imply that the civ races have been active and expanding and killing the various megabeasts and boogeymen.

When I have dwarves start in a little corner where they can't expand, I have worldgens that take 15 seconds.  It's 6 hours if they get out.

And worldgen will come to a screeching halt if there's a large battle going on.

And worldgen will come to a screeching halt if there's a large battle going on.

On the plus side, killing off a large number of people (like if a town gets sacked when they lose a war) will dramatically increase speed thereafter.

I've watched worldgen speeds, and I can occasionally get a world that slows down around year 310 or so grind to a near-halt suddenly shoot back up in speed again for another century, and note that some of the civilization markers suddenly became indicators of smaller communities during that time.

Just genned a very large world for 250 years. Was fine up until about 180 maybe, and then after 210 it crawled. The last forty years took so long to chug through. Still my world map looks pretty damn cool. So can't complain.
