Item inaccessible spam
« on: February 16, 2012, 05:54:52 pm »

I've abandoned once because of this already. Its nerve wrecking.

Now my second fort is having them too. I just dont know what to do, it drives me mad slowly. Theres no way to find out what item they are talking about either.

Yeah, many of my forts have died from that only.

My computer can handle 200 dwarfs without a hitch, but item cancellation drives me nuts :(

Yes, I want to kill all other output from dorfs regarding jobs that are not canceled because of one trite problem.

Thank you sir.

I got this once when animal people in the underground died.

My dorfs wanted their spears but hadn't actually discovered the region where spears lie. So they spammed forever more ... what you want to do is to remove / replace stockpiles until you find the affected one. You can zone in on the problem this way and work on forbidding the items from the stocks screen. A good bookkeeper finds everything with his mind! ... it's a bit tedious but you can make it work.

Apparently my refuse stockpile was producing the alerts. Now to look at every corpse/refuse item on the map to decide which one it is.

I'm just getting "Urist McErrandboy cancels give food, no food available". Repeatedly. I have plenty of food, but perhaps it doesn't count cooked meals as edible.

Eh, it's not so bad. At least it lets you know when you've done something to break pathing and/or your fortress. "What do you mean you can't get to the furniture stockpile? The furniture stockpile is just on the other side of the great hall, which is... OMFG... underwater!?"

Hm. Sometimes dwarves get the weirdest ideas about collecting the remains of some corpse.

You could go into the remains, corpses, bodyparts, bone etc settings ... and forbid EVERYTHING. Then go into the standing orders and tell them to forbid all dead and death items. Now no new corpsies will start spamming ... then, using d b c you can mass designate all the layers of your fortress that you know are accessible and full of things you want - as "reclaim". Shouldn't take long! :) especially since we can designate over Z levels now

Items who are under the tiles of shops can't be inaccessible ever, right?

Further investigation: its a CORPSE. but there are only 7 corpses on the map, and all of them are forbidden.

FURTHER FURTHER investigation. There are 11 dead or missing on the map. It stands to reason that the dwarves are trying to path to some troll-odyte and thus actively assaulting my mental faculties.

Forbidding the troglodyte corpse type have stopped the spam.

The trolldyte must be in the caverns, which I've now created a path to, probably to the great detriment of my fortress.

I knew it! I hate when the dwarves get it in their heads to retrieve something that's deep in the caverns.

I always make sure that the dead and their items are forbidden upon death. Armok knows we have many stories about socks and the lives they've taken on this forum.
