Miners won't take a pick
« on: February 16, 2012, 05:52:20 pm »

Hi all, long time no post. Jumped back in for the new version, and I have run into a bit of a pickle.

I've got a moderate, growing fort (~50 dwarfs), but only one pick to go around. That pick was held by a miner who got injured in a cave-in. I got him to drop it by designating it for dumping, but now no other miners will pick it up. It's not forbidden, either. Any thoughts?

I am on my way to make a new one, but I don't have metal yet, so that'll be tough. Caravan will arrive eventually, too, but it's a bit odd.

Just tried, no luck. Good idea, though.

Huh... I had something similar happen once, but it wasn't a pick, it was a sword. I'm not quite sure what's going on there... But I wonder... If the miner died, would you be able to get the pick? (Yes, I know, not exactly what you were going for)

Forbid it, unforbid it and wait for a Dwarf to put it in a stockpile. Then your miner should take the pick.

Well, I forgot that I can't get my military to attack him, and I can't do anything drastic like collapse a roof on him because of the lack of a pick. I guess I'll just have to hope that my incompetent doctor and his three infections do him in.

This happened to me as well in the new version. Unassigned his labor and had someone dump the pick, unforbid it but other miners wouldn't pick it up. Once the bedridden dwarf died another miner took up the pick though.

Caravan stopped by and solved this one for me. Now I have many picks. Good to know.

I'm curious. Did the hospitalized miner still have designated areas left to mine? There's a reported bug that once you designate something for mining, you can't UNdesignate it. I'm wondering if that's why you couldn't get him to "release" it to another miner.

Darchitect might be right here, are there any flashing tiles on your map set to be mined?

Did you use Dwarf Therapist?  There's currently an issue with the claiming equipment flags, not all of the memory offsets have been pegged yet.

There were some tiles designated at the time, but as soon as another miner got a new pick, he went off and mined 'em out, no problem.

Also, yes I am using DT. That could have something to do with it, although I did go in and change the labors around in-game, as well, just to be sure.

They put the pick back in a weapon stockpile after I got a hauler to take it off of him. It just sat there, unused, though.
